You must always be true to yourself. I am loyal to my family and my really close friends. I have only a couple of friends that I am so close to as to consider them family. Casual friends, I would put family first. A true friend won't create a situation where you need to choose between them or your family.

I am more loyal to my friends than with my family because I realize that almost all of my family members had let me down; but my friends were there to ask how was I doing (when my Mom died), asked if my job was okay and if I needed to get a better one, my health, everything. I spend more time with them then with my family. I only have two relatives that has any interest in how I am doing. My mother's first cousin and my 91 year old aunt. So, besides those two, I am more loyal to my friends.

Family must come first, then friends, but I am always loyal to myself because if I'm not I could never be loyal to others.
