If husband and wife are in total agreement about division of assets, who gets to take care of the kids, what kind of alimony is to be paid, etc. etc. then they can file divorce papers very inexpensively.

Usually there is some kind of disagreement, each needs to get their own lawyer, then there is a court appointed judge person to listen to the arguements of both lawyers, who get to cross-examine husband and wife, and decide some compromise between theri wishes.

It would probably be cheaper & easier for the mate who was abandoned, to claim the other one is dead and gone, and get them officially declared dead and gone.

He does need need her to show up, in fact, that might be easier for him. If he doesn't know where she is, he can serve her through a public posting like a newspaper, after a certain period of time, the judge will rule. If there is no joint agreement and she doesnt show up the judge most likely will give your friend whatever he is requesting
