Well I noticed a hole about the size of a quarter in the floorpan of my car, I think it might by were water built up because other than that one spot the rest of the floor pan is in very good shape, but I was going to take my car to a auto upholstry shop and I was wondering if they would put new carpet in with that hole being there.

I'm sure if you told them to put the new carpet in with that hole in the floorpan they would but why would you do that? just get a piece of sheet metal and patch the hole by putting screws in the patch to hold it and then seal around the patch with a waterproof sealer.

Any good upholstery shop will not want to cover up and hide something that could result in someone being seriously injured or killed.

Many years ago, I think it happened in New Hampshire, a little girl jumped from the front seat into the backseat of her father's car (this was before seat belts). She went completely through the rotted carpeting and floor pan and ended up hitting the road at freeway speed and was killed.

That hole may only be the size of a quarter, but my guess is the metal nearby is as thin as foil and should be replaced all the way up to metal that is structurally sound - IF you can find structurally sound metal.

If you are going to the expense of replacing the carpet, then why not go ahead and have the floor pan repaired also? It will make the new carpet last a lot longer.

That is the only way to do it. Other than that you are throwing your money away. It won't cost much to weld in a patch.

good luck.

Yeah they'll put it in, but they will probably let you know that it's there. You can have a body shop weld in a patch panel for relatively cheap as long as it is just that one spot and not the entire floorboard. Be aware that the entire floorboard may be rusty, even if it looks solid. Only a good body shop can tell you if it is an easy fix or not. If you already have the carpet out, you can get an estimate done, that way you are not committing to them at all, just pricing it.

Good luck!

yes they will cover over it,but if i was you id just tell them to patch it,I'm sure they have experience at doing this, any one who has ever installed a lot of carpet in cars can patch small holes like this, they wont charge much, but it would be better to patch it than leave it open, good luck on it.

I would just cover the hole with a small piece of sheet metal, use a coin if you have to, and us JB Weld to seal it. It is a cheap fix but is fine since you won't see it.
