Hmm, "work on expressions" sounds vague. If you are in a musical, your eyes and smile are very important (a dour or blank expression will kill an upbeat musical number).
If it is a realistic acting piece, you don't want to merely paste on expressions. You will play what you need from the other character in the scene, and your character's reactions will arise from that. If you have the proper focus and commitment to the scene, you will not need to indicate feelings with a "sad" face, "angry" look, etc.

Expressions should reflect your mood and feelings toward a given situation. They should come naturally and be a part of you. Listing them won't provide you with the ability to use them when appropriate. Attempt to place yourself in the character's shoes. How would that character react in a given scenario? Allow your emotions to take over and guide you. If you can make yourself cry on cue...chances are you've got it.

sounds like a weird assignment to me. If you are reacting like the character reacts, which is to say if you are really acting, it would seem to me that your facial expression would be exactly what it nees to be. if you are not makeing the riht facial expressions, you are not acting. simple.
