gezz, amazing how they try to answer and don't know themselves

a hand is 4 inches

58.5 divided by 4 = 14.625
14 x 4 = 56
58.5 - 56 = 2.5

Your horse is 14 hands 2 1/2 inches (or roughly 14.2hh)

When you put the decimal in you can only have 0,1,2, or 3 because its read 14 14.1 14.2 14.3 15 15.1 etc there is no such thing as 14.6 cuz that would be 15.2 hh the decimal always represents the inches over the full hand.

oh yeah, and you measure up to the top of the WITHERS. To find this point, have your horse lower its head and find the highest point of the withers (usually around the end of the mane)

Horses are measured at the shoulder.

In olden days, cowboys did not have tape measures. So when it came to measuring horses, they had to use something they had with them (ie their hands). The would use the width of their palm as one hand. They could go hand over hand from the ground to the horses shoulder to get an idea of how many "hands" tall the horse was.

Now a hand has a standard measurement: 1 hand = 4 inches.

Divide 58.5" by 4.

Hands are four inches each, so how many fours go into 58? XD

No sorry I was talking like I talk to my little sister, but you can figure it out like that.

each hand is 4 inches. you only measure from the ground to the top of the horse's withers. so, to solve your problem, divide 58.5 by 4 (58.5/4). which would be 14.2 hands.
