My friend has been smoking for 27 years and he has suffered 3 heart attacks. I have told him numerous times to stop, but he says if i can get at least ten people to give advice to him, he will get help. Any advice or experiences?

I quit 3 days ago. I do not believe in nicotine-containing substitutes (gums, patches), because smoking is not a bad habit, it is a nicotine addiction. I did not use anything, but I also did not quit cold-turkey. For three days before completely quitting I made myself not smoke all day long with the exception of two or three evening cigarettes. Two days ago I denied myself even those. I still think about lighting one at certain times of the day, but with every passing day it is easier not to smoke. What keeps me from smoking is the realisation that we really DO NOT get any pleasure from it, just the pleasure after, when our starving nicotine-craving little monster is satisfied. Once you stop feeding that monster inside, it will sooner or later die, and you will become FREE.

P.S.: I know at least two people who quit with the help of hypnosis and swear by it. I did not need it, though I had been a smoker for 9 years.

i am a heavy smoker my self up to now. but there was a time that help me stop smoking. i joined kick boxing i got really competitive. and smoking hinders my proformance. so i decided to stop smoking. i think u should tel your friend to get in to sports that he would enjoy. any out door sport will do. and u should join him to keep him company. and u must no keep reminding him to stop smoking coz the more he wants to smoke. eventually he will quit on his own. well it worked 4 me b4. hehehe just give it a shot ohh yeah he must not stop in an instant coz he will suffer withdrawal. say 4 example if he can consume 1 pack 1 day take 1 stick dont tell him unconsusly his brain will tell him that he finish 1 pack on that day tahe 1 more stik every week passes ^_^

I quit smoking 10 days ago. I started smoking 16 years ago and I smoked about a pack a day. All I can say is check out the drug Chantix. It is wonderful! It works! No withdraw!

I think it's called Smoke Away. But it worked for my dad.

Oh and tell your friend that he better stop. Because smoking isn' t cool anymore. My mom's aunt just died a few months ago from lung cancer from smoking and my dad's friend is dieing right now. So you should tell him to stop or he'll be on the same boat. And I know as a friend, you wouldn't want to see him with lung cancer.

This is not going to be a easy task. someone smoking for that long is must be addicted. My suggestion is to tell him is to chew gum if he is fiending for a cigarette. He will most likely gain some weight due to the metabolism drop and he will probably want to eat more because he is trying to occupy himself.

cold turkey is the best way. if you take any kind of nicotine replacement, you still crave nicotine. Go cold turkey and a week later or two weeks later your withdrawals are gone. Although you will always want a cigarette no matter what...

If 3 heart attacks hasn't convinced him, I seriously doubt anything will.

Once you've stopped, remember, "You're a puff away from a pack a day."
