On 12/21/12, you will come to the realization that you have just been duped by disinformation, misinformation, and lies perpetrated by doomsayers, armegeddonists, psychics, science fiction writers, and common kooks on the great world wide web.

That's where you are getting your information isn't it?

If you are serious about finding out about the Mayan calendar and it's implications regarding cycles, go to your local library and check out John Major Jenkins. Think about the validity of your sources the next time you search the web.

What will happen is an astrological event concerning Earth's precession when it reaches 60 degrees in relationship to the galactic plane. It has to do with how the middle of the galaxy will be at horizon on the winter solstice as seen from Earth. That's it. Sorry, no asteroids or pole shifts or Nibiru. Just something to look at up in the sky. Yes, the Mayans developed their calendar to mark this astronomical event. Why? Because they were astronomers and mathematicians. They watched the skies every night and made detailed observations. The Mayans NEVER said that 2012 would be the end of the world. That has all been made up by your internet sources too. The Mayan calendar doesn't end in 2012 any differently than our Gregorian calendar ends in 2007.

The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN= 584283). The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed.[2] However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. The December solstice for 2012 also occurs on this day.

It is the last day of the mayan Calender, and some speculate the end of man kind, Armagedon and such. Really depends on what you believe and if you buy into all that.

Christmas shopping.
The Mayan calendar isn't ending, so the world isn't ending. Don't worry about it.
