At least, why do Brazilians speak Portuguese? We Brazilians have native languages: let's learn and use! In fact each colnized country keep its metropole culture added to its native one. It's a fact, not a problem.

As for Indians in India, the British colonization was a lengthy experience. You have to remember that the British East India Co. had already started trading extensively with India by the 1600's, and by the mid 1700's, India and the North American colonies were the two main cornerstones of the British empire and were contributing significantly to the Empire's economy. India remained under British control until 1948, by which time the British had officially made it a crown colony, and had imposed education, legal and political systems all based on English. As such, it became spoken by a significant enough portion of the Indian population that, upon independence, it could be one of India's official languages.
Indians, however, have not forgotten their native tongues. There is no single, unifying language spoken in India that the population will readily accept as "the one" indian language. Hindi, predominantly spoken in the north, is by far the most widely spoken "native" tongue, but Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, and Bengali are also close behind. Because English is sort of a pan-India language, it is used for a wide range of functions, and is taught to children in school. Most states, however, will require that signs and documents are written in both languages (some states like Karnataka - home to Bangalore, are more strict about this than others, like Maharashtra - home to Bombay).

Do you not realize that the British were in India for quite a long time & many British soldiers married Indian women. French was the international language, now it is English. For the good of the economy of India, some continue to speak English. For many it is their native tongue & Indian is a second language! India is a very religious country but they recognize the right of it's citizens to practice any religion they choose. The British colonization is a part of their history, why should they forget it?

People of India have 18 different well recognised native Languages. There is nothing wrong in adopting a useful common world language like English for interacting with others.Because of this India is growing fast into a strong economic power. The talented Indians are able to compete with other nationalities because attracted because of High standard of English education. As for Atheism, you seem to have got wrong impression. An average Indian (Hindu) has strong belief in God. His belief may differ from that of yours. Even if he is an atheist there is nothing wrong so long he is a good person in this world.

Knowing English has brounght great economic benefits for India in the form of IT. No one can deny that. Sacrificing mother tongue for English is another subject.
My opinion about Indian being an Indian is that we are always liked to be ruled by others and have a great inferiority complex. We think that other races are more knowledgeable. Tradition has shown that Indians are brought down only by Indians. Indians donot like our own people to prosper and will take every opportunity to curtail it - that is what many say that villians to Indians arte Indians.
This villianism in Indians mind is hard to change and will always be there. If Indians start to beleive in god and language, then something is happening in this world - a revolution is happening.

I'm in North America & there are NOT a lot of "very religious" people in my location. Let me guess. Are you anti-western * have no idea what you are talking about? Most of the tribes that are left don't know their original language & those that do try to preserve their heritage & mother tongue for use in private & ceremonial celebrations. After everything that has been done to destroy them, I can see why they'd want to keep it away from the masses who want to learn the language in order to take MORE away for purposes of greed & power. Atheism is a lifestyle & belief system that is based in many different things. If anyone could be accused of trying to intimidate anyone...it would be the Atheists who are taking some of their beliefs from the ancient ways of the Indians who were Earth Worshippers & believed in the energy of the elements! Poor dear, me thinks you are very confused! Please don't strap a bomb on yourself & decide to go to a shopping mall!

Bcas India has many languages and the indian states are organised mainly on language basis. Fortunately or unfortunately, English became the link langugage and is the only language in the status of common language. This is the urban perception of india. But in rural India, people due to simple ways of life do not undertake travels widely beyond their language areas and hence, they need not worry about any othr land or language, even after colonialism came and went away.As for atheism, no imitation of anyone; atheism existed in the Jabali Hermit, who will ask inconvenient questions; onceagain, rural india is always religious; city-based, anti-Hindu based Hindu people even now try to spread denial of Hindu concepts, which is the only atheistic practice in India now. Taking advantage of poverty, social division and greed, missionaries try to do the same; Such people forget that religion is chosen by father or mother and a person is able to choose religion only for his off-shoots and not for oneself.

In this era of globalisation, the world has to speak & understand one language. One can not change the history. The USA & the majority of the countries the world over were under the colony , once upon a time. Why do the French & the Russian colony countrys also speak English.
And my dear friend, permit me to ask...Why have you asked in English...

We had a great man called Rajagopala Chaari-(the first and the last Governor General of Free India). He was a Brahman and highly educated man.
He once quoted: English is the gifted language of Goddess Saraswathi
We Indian consider Goddess Saraswathi for education.

It is an important language for business all around the world, and some people think it is a good idea to learn how to speak to English speaking tourists.
This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with religion.
