For the sake of this question, I'm not including the middle class (and I'm assuming only three classes).

There are very few cases which I believe truly justifies a welfare system and most of those have to do with physical or mental handicaps. I believe the government should have programs which empower the lower income citizens to pull themselves up and make their own lives better. This would include public sector jobs appropriate to their skills, community college grants, technical or transitional skills training, and financial counseling. Most people in such situations just need an opportunity and tools to help themselves, not a handout.

As for the wealthy, they have the means to help themselves and should be ashamed to accept or ask for help from the government.

Their are two ways people normally think on this. The libs want to just help the poor by taking away from the rich. Most Repubs want to help the rich, so they can grow their companies and increase jobs.

The real bad thing is that this administration has allowed for all of the union busting in the last few years. That is attacking the middle class. The dems haven't done anything to stop this either, and they are supposed to be for the unions.

The rich should be able to take care of themselves since they have the resources to get whatever help they might need.
Of course, rich conservatives will claim the government needs to help them so they can "help" others in a "trickle-down" economy. Which is mostly b.s. Seldom do you see a CEO who makes 800 times as much as his average employee sacrifice his paycheck as he cuts jobs, lays off employees, and downsizes the company for the sake of profits, shareholders and his own wallet.
The poor, on the other hand, have no resources with which to help themselves. Any compassionate government must be obligated to the most unfortunate in its society: the disabled, disadvantaged, underprivileged, undereducated, unemployed, aged, sick, hungry and homeless. They often cannot help themselves achieve even the most simple of tasks.
To understand the distinct differences between rich and poor,, read Ruby Payne's excellent book, "A Framework for Understanding Poverty". -RKO- 08/20/07

how and why would you even ask such a question its common sense the POOR rich do not need help they have money to get them help when they need it as opposed to being poor and not being able to afford help. When a rich person gets sick they go pay a topnotch doctor when the poor get sick they need the govt to help them pay for a affordable doctor that will take them same with law rich get in trouble 99% of the time they hire a pitbull attorney and good bye jail time when poor get in trouble with the law they get a legal aid and get misplaced in this horrible unorganized excuse for a legal system that is just 2 reasons why the truth to that question is plain old common sense!

To answer this question you must first make to more assumptions.

1) That some group needs your (the governments) help. That the way they live their lives is wrong and needs to be changed.

2) Someone else should pay for the changes of another group.

I don't think either is true.

As far as I am concerned, everybody should be treated , equally and this includes getting help from the government, poor or not.

Constituting what defines "help" has always been the bone of contention in politics in my lifetime. All I can say is that we are only as strong as our weakest link. We have had 27 years of helping the rich and not one dam thing has trickled down except blame.

They should help people who cannot already help themselves. That excludes the rich. What could they possibly need help with? Getting that third jet paid for?

The government should avoid pretending to 'help' anyone, and stick to securing the rights of it's citizens, maintaining the rule of law, and protecting the country from foriegn powers.
