What happened to the party of Jefferson?

Great question but liberals won't want to hear the answer (because it's true). Much of liberal inspiration is derived from civil rights.

There was a time (40+ years ago) when civil rights drastically needed change; there were atrocities that inspired liberals- idealism is if often birth'd from reading a book like "To kill a Mockingbird" or when a black child tells his mom he was called the N word by other children. It's very noble to crusade against injustices.

Well, laws have been corrected and it's time to heal, forgive and bring people together, but we can't. Liberals yearn for that cause but it's time has past. Almost every liberal advocate group follows the path of civil rights (because it was effective) but the agenda has changed. Socialism is now a partner to every group- gay rights, civil rights, abortion rights, etc. People who support the 2 wrongs make a right view e.g. affirmative action BUT they will never ever agree there will be a time when it should end; socialism has corrupted these liberals to believe they need to get even OR commit the same crimes, that inspired them to become liberals.

Socialism has corrupted every liberal group and they march arm and arm together. Anyone who opposes any of these groups is (in liberal thought process) guilty of the crimes from pre 1970's (in the liberals mind). These crusaders don't believe their ideology can become corrupt and can't see what the rest of us see.

They did not. and are not far left or socialist. The problem with you conservatives is you believe your own propaganda.

Try looking at other democracies, like Canada, Germany or Sweden. Virtually every other developed democracy has private arms control and public health, not to mention a hundred other social programs that no democrat advocates. The constant barrage of propaganda from the Republican neoMcCarthyites has made any social justice issue into an advocacy of communism.

Given that the conservatives who now run the GOP are the ideological descendants of the men who opposed public education, emancipation, universal sufferage and equal rights, how can we respect anything they say? The stock response that anything that might hurt corporate profits is creeping socialism is so lame yet pervasive that other democracies consider us morons.

Never mind about the party of Jefferson. What has happened to the party of Lincoln? Have we forgotten how the Republicans absorbed the old southern Democrats because they opposed civil rights? Now they are opposing public health care, so it must be good, don't you think?

The biggest socilaist give away in the history of America is Bush's disastrous Medicare program.

Again, as someone has already pointed out, the liberals may look like they've moved left, but that's only because the neo-cons have moved so far right, they've trampled our constitution, started an illegal war, outed our own CIA agents in acts of political revenge, and spent more money thatn 10 generations of Americans will be able to repay.

Meanwhile, corporations make billions in profit off the blood of our soldiers, while the republican controlled congress voted against a bill that would've outlawed war profiteering..an act that was considered treasonous in previous wars,

Dems aren't left and socialist..it's the neo-cons who are far right and fascist.

Do you even know what a "socialist" is?

What kind of a dumb question is this?

Last time I looked, democratic members of congress were not voting to give their personal property away and form agricultural communes in Cape Cod.

That's a pretty good question. I guess it's been a slow process. Even since the time of JFK. They are beholden to many leftest special interests groups. They need money from them to win elections, when they are elected they have already committed to these extreme leftists causes and govern that way. BTW: I'm no expert, just my opinion.

I think it lies in the very philosophy of the party. "Democracy" is an anti-American system that our founders hated. Sadly, most Republicans have embraced it as well.

the federal reserve board is essentially a socialist institution. a lot of repub investors are very happy with that socialist institution right now. but they do want it to be even more socialist in order to keep stocks from sliding.
