Should everybody bow to the altar of political correctness and trade in their normal sized cars for Priuses or some other PC-approved machine? Is it OK for people to value their lives such that they are willing to pay more for gas?

Not if everybody would slow down. Imagine a world where everybody did a 45 mph speed limit. If we could eliminate accidents imagine how much lower your insurance would be. Its a win-win situation. Think.

I heard about that study, too.

Been in 4 accidents (all as a passenger in a compact or sub-compact car), one of them potentially serious very serious.
I'm not dead. I wasn't even injured, actually.

There are two possible confounding variables in that study:

1) Age. Young drivers are much more likely to get themselves and thier passengers killed. Young drivers also tend to buy smaller cars, because smaller cars are cheaper cars.

2) Sports cars: high-performance two-seaters are 'small cars' - and if you're driving a car designed to go tripple the old federal speed limit, chance are, at some point, you will, and if you make one teeny mistake while going that fast....

I don't know if the study tried to control for those factors, at all, but if it didn't, or didn't do it well, then it could be bogus.

Of course, it /is/ true that larger vehicles offer better survivability in collisions, with other vehicles, especially smaller ones. Simple physics. So bigger vehicles are generally a bit safer. Modern airbags and passenger cages, though, make most vehicles reasonably safe.

I, in my SUV plan to continue to purchase a larger Suburban (again), and another Silverado soon . I will pay the price of additional gas, for the safety of the larger vehicle, as my familie's lives and safety are of unmeasurably greater than the FOOL IN THE TINY VEHICLE WHO DRIVES IT LIKE IT IS A SHERMAN TANK !!!!!!!! The drivers of the small cars, are typically the ones cutting across lanes about 20 -30 mph above the speed limit, darting from the LEFT lane all the way across the Interstate to exit, which he / she did not prepare for, in time, because they were on their cellphones!

I don't care if someone has a mini-van or SUV. The only time it ticks me off is when some asshole at the store parks an SUV right next to my car, making it hard to find in the parking lot, and even harder to back out.

Some people need those larger vehicles anyway... for big families, drug runs, kidnappings, etc...

I'll tell u what, I drive a Chevy Silverado that I bought in 01 and I plan on buying another one in a yr or two. W/ the new fuel standards and gas mileage minimums I plan on getting me another one pretty soon. I wanna do my part to take care of the Earth and getting a new more fuel efficient pick up will (hopefully) allow me to do it.

First of all, and I hear the Boo's already, I am tired of "Politically Correct." What ever happened to right and wrong? If it is right for you get a small car, if not get one YOU want!

They'll have to pry my dead hands off the steering wheel to get my Tahoe with a big honkin' greenhouse gas spewing 350 V8. Unless I'm in an accident with a Mack truck, I'm pretty sure my family will get the better end of it.

People should purchase a car that suits their needs. Many of the newer models are more gas efficient than they were a couple years ago. No...we shouldn't be bullied into buying small if it doesn't suit our needs.

These days, cars are rated for safety based on the damage to the car when it hits a brick wall. I think we should return to the days when safety was determined by the damage to the wall.

i didn't think of the issue on this level.

I am going to buy a bigger car - diesel car - 2 litre engine - 4 x 4 to save my life!!!

Yes, it's ok to value your life to this extent however I don't know whether people in big cars thought about this issue.
