There are a great deal of mundane reasons you need to rule out before considering the paranormal as an answer. Examine the door very carefully, especially the latch. Does the door have a problem firmly latching when you close it? Also, examine the way it moves due to gravity. Try leaving the door open a crack and stepping back, watching if it swings open on its own accord or not. Also try partially latching the door and seeing if the spring in the latch forces the door open. If it's particularly well oiled, even that bit of force could be enough to swing the door open. Another thing you may wish to check is the possibility of a draft or gust of air blowing the door open. Are there any vents pointed at the door? Perhaps one room is more well ventilated than another, causing a pressure differential between rooms that is sufficient to push the door open?
Barring that, place a ball or something on the floor by the door. If the door opens up, watch the ball and see if it starts rolling. If it does, it could be a sign that the area of the floor near the door is unstable, and that weight shifting in the house (perhaps simply by you being in the kitchen) is causing the floor to tilt slightly.
Check out all mundane possibilities first, and after the obvious conclusions have been ruled out, start brainstorming on more far-fetched ones.
By the way, it's spelled "apparition". :)

I know ghosts exist but I must ask. Was the door closed good? Was the wind blowing? Has this door done this in the past? Did you notice anything different besides the door opening? I like to have knowledge before blaming a ghost.

It is possible it's a spirit. Whether or not you believe in Ghosts doesn't mean you can't be haunted by one.
As long as all the spirit does is open/close doors and move things around then I don't see a problem.
If things turn nasty do not express fear in the presence of the spirit. Be direct and forceful when you want the spirit to stop doing something. If things turn really nasty, then seek professional assistance.
Most spirits do not form apparitions, though you can sense their presence by temperature differences (it will get chilly for no apparent reason),

Many things could be causing the door to open by itself. It could be drafts or the way the door was installed or even humidity in the air. Check out all the natural possibilities before you go with the ghost theme.

I believe it was someone you might know that has past over and was letting you know they are still around now and again checking in with you or your husband.
A Ghost is a Spirit which is a Soul the Etheric body that we use to Astral Travel so when we pass over that is what leaves the body.
It is understood as a sort of life force body or aura that constitutes the "blueprint" of the physical body, and which sustains the physical body. “Also known as our Aura”
Some people don't pass over because of unfinished business
Or they just don't know they have died
Or they didn't know to go to the light
This is what people call a Ghost
I call Spirit they may just be a Lost Soul
These are then Earth bound Spirits you may call Ghosts
Or sometimes family members that have past over come back to heal you when you are ill or just pop in to see how things are going in your life : )
Do you also know that people that Astral Travel are seen as ghost, so maybe people are seeing ghost maybe are just living people just exploring via Astral travelling : )
Food for thought isn't it ?
Nothing in life is to be feared, It is only to be understood.
Love & Blessings

Yep, it's a ghost or ghosts. Doors don't open themselves, and since you saw no one else around who could have done it, then it must have been done by a ghost. I saw ghosts when I was little. See my September 26, 2006 blog on my 360 site (click my avatar and then click 360). Just follow the current blog back to its full page and on the tag cloud on the left click "ghost."

Well I would say you have Paranormal activity in your house. but this could also be disproved, wind, something nudged it, etc.
I believe in the paranormal but i wouldn't say that would label what happened as a ghost doing it. It doesn't have to be a ghost at all. Something is just playing tricks with you. and if problems persist call a priest to bless the house.

I wouldn't necessarily think paranormal unless it happens frequently with no other explanation such as drafts, wind, gravity, e.t.c., and secondary evidence such as a cold spot near the door(s). It's believed that spirits need energy to manifest themselves as an image or to move things and they get the energy out of the surrounding air, thereby lowering the temperature and leaving a cold spot.
