Car cranks normally(as it did when it would start) Ive also just replaced the fuel filter - so i know for sure that the fuel is getting that far. How could i check the distributor timeing?

First you have to make SURE the spark plugs are getting spark. Pull one out, or get an inductive timing light to check. If not, it may be your computer or sensor. some vehicles have a crank sensor for timing, if the sensor goes out, no sense, so no spark. I'm not up on that, but you need to verify you are getting spark to spark plugs before diagnosing further. If you have spark, it could still be the crank sensor, as it won't know when timing is, either. Or, timing belt. Does it crank over faster than normal now?

If it was the timing belt the car would not crank. Could be the battery depending on the charge in it, When you put it under load by cranking it, it might not have the cranking volts it needs. Maybe a clogged air or gas filter

Take your distributor cap off and have someone crank the motor. If the rotor on the distributor doesn't turn then it's your timing belt. It turns then the belt jumped several teeth.
