GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service, which is a standard for wireless communications that runs at speeds up to 115 kilobits per second, compared with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) systems that operate at 9.6 kilobits. This increased bandwith (or throughput) allows data bursts to come through at a speed where you can use e-mail or call up a web browser on your phone.

in a nutshell, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) provides the transmission of IP packets over existing cellular networks.

it is a non-voice service added to existing TDMA (Time division multiple access) networks, one of the 2.5G technology upgrades. TDMA is the underlying transport mechanism used by GSM networks.
