Why is that? It's because meterology was part of my training of course.
(if I told you I was shot, and you asked where did I get shot... I'd say 'oh just down the street'. :)
Seriously though... There are plenty of currents, up drafts, down drafts, upper air currents (jet streams), onshore and off shore winds... the reasons are various, temperature differentials, pressure differentials etc.

Because air is in constant motion and as it moves over water, land and mountains, it rises and falls and forms strong streams, much like water does on the ground.
