OK first up it's confidential. Especially as you're 18. THEY CAN'T TELL YOUR MOTHER ESPECIALLY IF YOU ASK THEM NOT TO. I don't know where you live, but I'm pretty sure that's the law in the whole of the US, and places like UK/Australia. They can't tell her anything, it's malpractice.

Secondly, they can't tell if you're sexually active or not just by taking a look. All they can see is if your hymen is intact or not but that proves nothing because as you know there are many other ways to break it, tampons not the easiest way, but other activites horse-riding bike-riding, accidents (like falling on the crossbar of your bike ouch) and even masturbating. They could see bruising, if you had rough sex recently, and yeah if they did a thorough check I suppose they could find semen, if again the sex was recent, and there was no condom, but that's it.

Having said that, it can be very important for your doctors to know if you're having sex or not (depending on what they're treating you for, but they usually need to know). So you'd be best to be honest with them. And they can't tell your mother.

First of all if you are 18 or even 16 you can see a physcian with out your parents consent most insurance companies consider this a sensitive service with no disclosure to your parents unless you are under the age of 13 including if you are covered under a state medicaid program.

Secondly your doctor can not discuss any medical information with your parents unless you express this to be so by giving your written consent this goes for doctors that are also in small towns and may know your parents very well. Its call the Hippa Law and when you go to the doctor they will ask you to read and sign this showing that you have been made aware of your rights.

Now if you would like for your parents to know that you are sexual active tell them when you are comfortable and ready to. But may I suggest when you do go to the doctor get std testing especially for HPV and more information on prevention of std and pregnancy.

*sigh*

1) You're 18... unless your mom's a Puritan retard, I'm sure she expects you to begin being sexually active.

2) Doctors are not allowed to disclose ANYTHING to your parents without your consent.

3) Your doctor doesn't care and won't judge you for it

4) Your mom isn't getting you "checked out" to see if your hymen's broken/you're active, etc... she's making you get a pap test because you need to get checked every year starting after you become active OR over the age of 18 to make sure there are no abnormalities that can cause cervical cancer. It's the most common kind, just after breast cancer so, uncomfortable as it is, it's for your own good.

No they won't be able to tell that you are sexually active unless they ask you. The hymen can break for a lot of reasons such as a fall.

They may ask what kind of menstrual protection you use for your period and that's ok. But the tampon doesn't necessarily break the hymen in all cases.

Because it will be your first time (and good that your mom is suggesting seeing a gynecologist for annual pap smear and exam) I would recommend a female physician because I think you will feel more comfortable talking to her.

You're the legal age of adulthood and your doctors CAN'T tell anything to your mother because of patient/doctor confidentiality. If the doctors do spill the beans, you could sue them for a lot of money and they should know that. I think you're pretty safe. Plus by law, you can ask your mother not to be in the room because you're an adult now. I think by 18 you should know what how to protect your self from pregnancy.

Your doctors can't tell your mother ANYthing. If they did, they'd risk being sued AND losing medical licenses, meaning, they wouldn't be able to practice medicine anymore.
As far as them being able to tell....they can tell if you had sexual activity recently. However, you are not supposed to engage in intercourse a couple days before the exam anyways.
Overall, though, it is best to be honest. They will be able to educate you about sexual health, talk to you about birth control options, and check you for STDs, which I highly advise you to do. To check for STDs, they can take a urine sample or a blood sample. If you get a pap done, they will be able to check for HPV and precancerous changes of the cervix.
Good Luck

If you are sexually active and 18 you need to be truthful with your doctor as you will need to start getting pap smears.. your doctor can't tell your mother anything.. but for your health be truthful to your doctor..

Besides judging from your last question i would get a pregnancy and STI check..

And also you are old enough to make your own decisions.. be truthful to your mother to

She's right. There's nothing wrong with having sex by the time you're 18, anyways. Just be truthful and everything will be okay.
Good luck!

It's not your mom's business anymore! The doctor is not allowed to share any of your health info with anybody unless you give him or her written permission.
