I have heard this- I do not know where or why but the only thing I can think of is a single man is less likely to go to the DR for treatment then a married man is because the wife will make sure he goes.

KM - If you are single don't expect to ever get married. If you are married, it's no wonder you're miserable.

To answer you question, I have never heard that but I believe it. If I look at my own hubby, I know he will live longer because of this:
- He used to binge drink several times per week. He now has A beer once a week at a restaurant. (Clean liver, anyone?)
- He used to smoke almost a pack a day. He now has been smoke-free for almost three months. (Better complexion, can smell and taste the food I cook, isn't irritable and nickin, has more money, and lungs!).
- He used to smoke weed at least once per day. He has been pot-free for two years. What can I say, I like brain cells and apparently he does, too.
- He used to eat only caffinate, canned and frozen food. That can't be good for you in the long run.
- He now exercises regularly and plays with his children to de-stress.
If you ask me, he will live longer than if he personally were single. Even if he doesn't, he will live a more fulfilled and joyful life and in the end, isn't that what you'd rather?

I think a single man lives longer then a married man, because the wife is always on his back to do this ,or do that, he has to work hard for his family and give all his money to his wife and on top of that pay all the bills and she would tell him to get a 2nd job he would work had just to die young. So you see the single man will live longer.

I don't know the stats on that but I have heard that this is a true evaluation.A married man is supposed to live longer because of the companionship the wife provides. When people are secure in this way, it only makes sense that they are content inside, which prevents stress, which triggers heart attacks, strokes, stomach problems...you get the picture.Being single won't kill you by all means but that lack of contentment & security would most likely make you lonely, thus making a path to depression. And if you've ever been truly, deeply depressed, that can make you want to die inside.

I heard that before and I don't think it's true. I know a gentleman who was married when he was 20 and divorced at 23. He is still single and living happily. He has girls on the side, but has lived alone all these years. He is now 80 years old.

I saw or heard that too. I think at first single men are happy to be playing the field but then eventually get lonely and/or want to be taken care of. I also heard that married men are the happiest people in the world, followed by single women, then single men, then married women. So supposedly married women are the least happy. Wierd.

"Married men live longer than single men. But married men are a lot more willing to die."
Johnny Carson

In answer to Heather K: Maybe the married men should get with the single women. That would make both happy, wouldn't it.

Yes, it's true. Statistically, married men live longer than single men because of the alleged "richness and completeness" of having a partner. Guess that would depend on the partner.

Married men do live, on average, 10 years longer than single men.

"Married men live a lot longer than single men, mainly because married men take fewer risks. They eat better, smoke and drink less and get in fewer bar fights. Married men adjust to the expectations people have of fathers and providers, and they have somebody taking care of and nagging them. Even if married men don't take fewer health risks, the benefits of companionship and caregiving are so powerful that one study found married men who drank and smoked lived longer than single men who didn't drink or smoke."
