Well, I don't know if he's considered present time, but Phil Keagy is the best. When Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the best guitar player in the world, he answered, "I don't know, ask Phil Keagy" --

It's hard to choose just one, so here are my favorites in no particular order:
Allan Holdsworth (UK and solo)
John Petrucci (Dream Theater and Liquid tension Experiment)
Carlos Santana
Eric Johnson
Eric Clapton
Roine Stolt (Transatlantic and the Flower Kings)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Steve Howe (Yes)
Larry Carlton (Steely Dan and solo)
