I don't know, it truly baffles me too. I don't understand how anyone can watch any INNOCENT living being suffer in such a sadistic manner, and enjoy it. All I can think is that maybe they just don't know the horrid details of exactly what all goes on not only in the fights, but before the fights.
They starve these fighting dogs, then just before the fight they take a dog they have stolen from a neighborhood, a nice little domesticated loved pet that belongs to someone, and throw it into the cage with the dog that is to fight and let him tear that pet to pieces, just to give the fighter the 'taste for blood'. If this kind of thing doesn't curdle your blood, then you are not human.
Edit
I don't think it is lack of education. Think about it, most of us knew BEFORE we even went to the first grade, that it was horrible to hurt something else that could feel the pain. I remember my father caught a mouse in a trap when I was a kid, and although I know now, for our own safety, we can't let them live with us, but...it absolutely broker my heart, I CRIED all night long, because I knew nothing about the diseases a mouse carried, all I saw was a cute mouse that he had KILLED.

Part of the rationale is the idea that anything not human is beneath us, and therefore of much lesser value. It isn't just the people thinking this, it is also written in the law. Think about it, if you are caught killing even one human, you get life in prison, or if you are in TX you get the chair. If you kill one dog, you get less than 5 years. It speaks of our value system. I agree with everyone that it is a heinous crime, but those perpetrating these acts view dogs as valueless. It is similar to seeing a kid torch an ant with a magnifying glass. I am not equating an ant with a dog, however, in both cases we place a very small value in the target, though we torture helpless creatures. The main difference is that we value dogs more than ants. Of course the part that I think they miss is that harming helpless creatures, whether human or animals, is flat out mean and characteristic of a bad, or evil, person. And forget the culture of poverty, Vick was definitely not poor when he started this, and there are people with money who undoubtedly participate in these acts - remember there is money involved. It is more social depravity than social status.

Because 'HUMANS' are the True 'BEASTS' of the world. They kill & harm for no reason and without provocation. Those that do so, just simply lack a Soul. Evil must be proud of them and I can only hope that if there is a hell in the end, there will be a seperate, more torturous one for people that have harmed the helpless.
P.S. Take away their guns, knives, bats, chains, etc. and let them stand bare fisted with ANY large animal and most small animals that would be in an attack state of mind, and humans would undoubtebly fall in defeat. PHYSICALLY, most animals are far superior to us. Why do you think humans have to have weapons?

I don't understand why people can not see why it is so horrible. You must be one depraved sadistic person to do something to an innocent animal. It probably has to do with a lack of eduacation. They weren't taught what's right from wrong. Or they are just plain sick and find it entertaining to torture an animal.

I don't think, anyone will really be able to understand, what's going through the minds of these sadistic, deranged, heartless individuals, who abuse innocent, helpless animals, and enjoy it. No punishment, could be harsh enough, for that kind of act. Anyone that abuses an innocent animal, makes my skin crawl!

My husband and I were just talking about it. There is something wrong with people who promote dog fighting like this. It is senseless, cruel and sick, they want the violence and blood. These people lack humanity. It is pathetic.

Well, sadly, I guess in the ghetto they will use any way possible to make money (hence all the drug dealing, even to children). These people were not brought up properly by whom ever parented them. The culture of poverty perpetuates itself.

They are just like Vick if they condone it, Dog Fighting is one of the most barbaric 'sports' in existence today. Although illegal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the people who fight Pits operate underground, making them very difficult to catch and successfully prosecute. The people involved in animal fighting operate in very closed circles, and the fights themselves are held in remote and secret locations.
What is Dog Fighting?
Dog fighting is seen as those involved as a 'sport'. It is in reality a vile 'contest' where two dogs (who have been bred, conditioned and trained to fight) are put into a pit to fight each other for the entertainment and gambling pleasure of the spectators. The fights usually last about an hour, but can last longer than two hours. The 'match' ends when one of the dogs either will not or cannot carry on.
Animal Cruelty
The injuries sustained by the dogs involved in fighting are severe and frequently fatal. These dogs are extremely powerful and are capable of doing serious damage to each other. The people who fight these dogs cannot take the dogs to a regular vet for fear of exposure to the law, so they generally 'medically treat' the dogs themselves, with little to no knowledge of veterinary medicine. As a result, these dogs frequently die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion and infection.
If a dog loses a match, the owner of the 'losing dog' frequently kills the dog... and not by humane methods. The dogs who lose matches are often left to die of their injuries, are shot or even electrocuted. The owners do this out of anger because the dog has embarrassed them by losing, or has cost them a lot of money, or to keep the fighting dog bloodlines 'pure' by removing that losing dog from the gene-pool.
Some owners also train their dogs for fights by using smaller animals as bait (cats, rabbits, small dogs). These animals are usually pets that have been stolen for this use, or acquired through the 'free to good home' ads.
State Laws
Although dog fighting is illegal everywhere in the US, dog fighting laws differ by state in the ways that they impact the perpetrators. In states that do not ban keeping or selling fighting dogs, law enforcement must actually catch the offenders in the act of fighting the dogs to be able to successfully prosecute. It is extremely difficult to infiltrate animal fighting circles, though people who fight animals are easily identified by the condition of their dogs, the training equipment and drug paraphernalia they possess.
A Community Problem
Many people are either unaware or turn a blind eye to obvious signs of dog fighting in their community. They shouldn't. Dog Fighting is a community problem for many reasons, including:
Dog fighters are often involved in the sale and possession of drugs, as well as illegal weapons. The weapons are present due to the large amount of cash present for betting upon the matches.
Dog fighters and spectators have a history of violent and criminal behavior towards people.
Dog fighting is another entertainment activity for gangs.
It is not uncommon for dog fighters or spectators to involve their children in dog fighting. Research shows that young children who view this type of violence have a greater acceptance of aggressive attitudes and behavior. These children are taught to believe that it's ok to inflict the cruelties they observe and that dog fighting is an acceptable practice.
The dogs that are used for fighting have been selectively bred for animal aggression. Their presence in the community increases the risk of attacks on other animals and also people.
What can I do to help?
For more information, a copy of your state's statute, or for tips on how to make your state's law more effective, you can contact the HSUS Government Affairs Section at 202-452-1100 or email legislation@hsus.org
If you live in a state where dog fighting is still only a misdemeanor, please write to your state legislators and urge them to make it a felony.
You are also encouraged to write letters to the media to increase public awareness of the dangers of dog fighting and to law enforcement officials to urge them to take the issue seriously. You can find a sample letter here. You can also display the HSUS dog fighting poster in your community.
If you suspect that dog fighting is going on in your neighborhood, alert your local law enforcement agency.
