Sheryl Crow is full of beans. Rod Stewart on the other hand (who also covered this track) seems to have it right, lol.
The first cut (or as I understand, the first time of being hurt) usually IS the deepest. You must by now be familiar with the phrase "once bitten, twice shy"? Well, to simplify this a bit, I do firmly that the first time we are "cut" is most certainly the deepest. It makes us more hardened to further attacks on our heart and soul.

I think Sheryl Crow is right
When the first cut is the deepest it can be an ugly sight
It is especially deep if it done by a friend
Of whom you believed you could really depend.

Not all the time. The first cut IS the most painful, that's for sure.
