Good question.
I think a balance should be made a space exploration could save our species, but it is quite wrong to allow our species to starve whilst we do that.
I hate to sound flippant, but why do we not all hold hands and work towards a common good.
Your question goes way beyond exploration, it goes right to the heart of ourselves.
And that is much harder to understand.

Space exploration is pretty necessary IF you're concerned with the survival of the human species. The Earth wont exist in its present state forever. It could be hit with asteroids, obliterated by a black hole, or engulfed by the the sun when the sun reaches the end of its life and becomes a red giant, etc.
So by investing in space exploration you are investing in the future of your species. I know it seems like nothing what space agencies do now but you have to start somewhere right? In the process of doing things that may seem trivial to humans in every day life they are pioneering space travel, learning techniques, and learning from their mistakes.
So in a sense you can give your money to the people that are starving now so that they can live but it would be proven futile since we'd all die together when the Earth is destroyed and we have no way off.
Sure people are starving in some countries but to be honest the big cats really don't give a %#$@. I'm sure they could take on both if they wanted to.

Well if it is my family we are talking about then feeding my family it is. The thing is that we humans do not relate to others at a distance. We feel it when its close to home first being family and friends, then neighbors, then people in our state. From there it moves to people in other states, and finally people in other countries. The lesser known the country is the less we care. Plus just giving money or food does not solve the problem. Is like a car that leaks oil. You can put a quart of oil every week to keep it going but you still haven't fixed the problem. Until the problem is fix the car will still leak oil. Same thing with world hunger. We have to understand what is the cause of the problem and then try to fix that. That is assuming people there really want to fix the problem but thats another issue all in itself.

It's a matter of balance. If nobody in history had ever invested time and energy (and therefore wealth) in new technology, we would all still be rummaging in the dirt for food, let alone throwing spears at animals.
We have to invest to survive. Ultimately the earth will no longer be able to sustain life and we will need to leave the planet and if we do not invest in space exploration now, it will be too late then.

Oh good grief, is everyone here completely incapable of simple mathematics?
There are, across the world, hundreds of billions of any unit of corrency being spent on issues such as famine relief, helth, homelessness, and so on. On the other hand, there are a few tens of billions spent on space research, and that research has benefited us all, even if you are too short-sighted to notice it. That computer you are writing on is partly the nice convenient size it is because of space research. Weather forecasts and hurricane warnings? Satellite weather monitoring. Global communication allowing rapid responses to humanitarian crises? Global satellite coverage.
Space research is useful, and considering the proprtion of funds devoted to it it's giving great returns. Take off your blinkers and look at the big picture.

Space is essential. As we use up this planet we would want another to go to later.

How about you give all the money you spend on internet access to relief programs? At least then we dont have to hear your self-righteous dribble.
