when they bite it really doesn't hurt. the best thing to get them are live crickets, when i had a leopard gecko i got them at petmart, good luck with your new pet!

No the don't bite, at least mine didn't. They are pretty cool animals. They eat crickets. It's good to dust the crickets in calcium powder, and put reptile vitamins in the water so that they get all their nutrients. They can eat meal worms too, but mine liked crickets better, and they were cheaper! Leopard Geckos are very docile animals, and make a great low-maintenance pet.

It is possible for leopard geckos to bite, BUT they have no teeth. They do have nails though, but even when they get bigger they don't hurt when they are crawling on your hand. It also depends on how aggressive your new gecko is. You cannot tell when they are babies, but it is good to get them when they are small because you can handle them and they become more people friendly.

As for feeding them. Here is the thing about feeding your new leopard gecko crickets. Crickets are noisy, so if you are planing on having your gecko tank in your room where you sleep, not a good idea. Also, if your gecko doesn't eat all of the crickets after a certain period of time you NEED to take them out otherwise the crickets will start to KNAW on your geckos tail, eyes, feet, and body. You also need to make sure that you keep the crickets alive by feeding them, because otherwise you will be running to the pet store every few days.

Now, here is your other option, the one I highly recommend. As another food option you can buy meal worms. There are two different sizes. You don't want the giant meal worms, those are two big. Rule of thumb, the worms shouldn't be longer than your geckos head. You can get these meal worms at PetSmart for about $2.49 for a 50 ct. You can buy multiple cans because as long as you keep the inactive ones in the fridge then they will stay fresh. Since the inactive ones aren't being fed they need to be "frozen" in the fridge so they don't use energy.

Now, for the active worms all you have to do is pick them out of the can and put them into a ventilated container. You will need to gut load (feed) them. I use flucker's cricket feed to feed them and also flucker's cricket quencher to give them moisture so that the gecko gets water from the worm. You need to wait 24 hours before the worms are gut loaded, then you will need to coat them in calcium before throwing them in a feeding bowl of your choice. You can get reptile calcium from PetSmart as well and all you do is put a small amount in a zip lock bag and add the worms then shake them around until they are coated. Then you can give them to your geckos.

Feeding time for my leopard geckos is about three minutes every night. It's much easier than using crickets. Some may tell you to shy away from the meal worms because they don't have enough nutrients, but as long as you follow the above steps you will be FINE with using meal worms. I've had mine for over a year and they are healthier than ever and they can eat whenever they are hungry without pesky crickets biting them.

Other things you will need for your geckos tank are as follows...

-Under tank heating pad
-Above tank heat lamp
-Water dish
-Food dish
-Two forms of shelter (one on the warm side of the tank, one on the room temp side)
-Reptile carpet for young geckos and sand for mature ones

Hope all of this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

they dont bite. they eat crickets and mealworms, but only if they move. easy to care for. once you get them in your hand they are really calm, and not at all hard to grab. they take a 20-gallon tank their entire life, pretty much. they eat once every five days, and you can just drop like 5 crickets in once a week. they need a light and heating pad underneath their tank. they also need one of those half-log thingies, and some aspen bedding is great, change it and wipe of the cage every few weeks. tthey also need a water bowl atleast an inch deep and 4 inches wide. that is the basics. they are great pets. gotta love 'em. hope i have helped you.

Read everything on this page and also the forums at reptilerooms.com for complete info before buying one. You want to do things right in order for him to survive. Don't believe anything the pet stores tell you without checking first--they don't usually give out correct care info.
