This is electricity and water, if the body of water would be an ocean then it will be salt water and be a better conductor. Lightning is also trying to find the path of least resistance to a grounded source.

Across the surface, especially if it's salt water. Lightning stays near the surface of good conductors.

since water is a liquid, the energy -in the form of heat -should spread out like a semi-sphere under water.
