A CPU family is a grouping of CPUs. For example, the Core 2 Due family is based on Intel's newest designs. AMD has an AM2+ family of CPUs that represent the newer Athlon 64 CPUs.

Best bet is to check out Intel's and AMD's site and look for things like motherboard socket and CPU. This will get you the CPU family.

Family is also a loose term for what design the CPU belongs. Semprons for example are weaker Athlons. Centrinos are Intel's handicapped Core 2 Duos.
