Jake M is not a mechanic if he said anything about gas and oil to answer this question. If you here a clunk when the key is turned it is the starter. If you here nothing it could be the starter or a bad ignition switch. If you can have someone try to jump the terminals on the starter. Jump the battery cable post to the ignition switch post. If it does not turn over, you need a starter.

Most probable cause are.
1. Weak or dead battery. (Even if the lights turn on fine, the starter motor need more current). Try jumping starting the car. If jump starting works, it's a bad battery.

2. If #1 doesn't work, take the starter motor out and have it tested. It's likely that your starter motor has gone bad.

Make sure you check your connections first, if not the battery may have bad cell. also, try another battery first before you replace the starter. To tell if the starter is bad try cranking with another battery when you turn the ignition you will here a clicking sound under the hood if the starter is ok.

could be several things bad or weak battery. dirty connections at the battery or at the starter. bad starter solenoid ( u can check this by crossing the points on the starter with a screwdriver) could also be bad brushes in the starter rap it with hammer to line up the brushes . rapping it with hammer could also help with the solenoid issue. if it is any of the problems i mentioned for the starter directly other than dirty connections it will have to be replaced
