I was just wondering because i am writing a paper on the ethics of stem cell research, and in all the things i've read they say alot about theraputic cloning. I'm wondering for my own personal knowlege and to see if my title even makes sense. The title is: "To clone or not to clone: The ethics of stem cell research"

Thanks in advance.

The origin of the stem cells is from the re- nucleation of a fertilized gamete with a donor nucleus so they are using one cloning technique to create the cells. So long as you don't imply this is the only use of cloning or the only ethical question to be asked about the use of cloning the title is OK but to avoid confusion with other definitions of cloning it can be called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) for research cloning. To clone or not to clone: The ethics of SCNT in stem cell research.
If you define your terms in the introduction you will be able to explain the procedure you are discussing and what ethical question it raises. Be specific about the limits of the argument you are presenting by eliminating other uses of SCNT, as well as other methods of cloning, from consideration in this paper.
Remember the concept of cloning is an enormous field covering plants as much as animals. This covers vegetative propagation, natural twinning, insect parthenogenesis, as well as artificial embryo twinning.
Even basic tissue culture that has no embryonic material involved should be defined if under consideration. Just carrying human cell lines has its own set of ethical questions as to ownership of the cells. Do they belong to the donor or the research company?
Uses of SCNT includes saving endangered species as well as being used in reproductive cloning for profit. Advanced Cell Technology's (ACT) researchers and their collaborators fused somatic cells of the endangered gaurs (B. gaurus) with the enucleated eggs from domestic cows (B. taurus) to help restore the gaur population.

Cloning and stem cell research are not one and the same. Current cloning of higher order organism is the production of an organism that is genetically identical to the parent. Stem cell research is the use of undifferentiated cells to understand the production and specification of cells. ie looking at how a cell like the heamopoietic stem cell though not pluripotent has the ability to differentiation into one of a mass of different blood cells.
The controversy and ethics with stem cell research is mainly found in the point of origin of the stem cells, which often is fetal material as a large amount of undifferentiated stem cells can be retrieved.
in addition is it right to use stem cells in therpeutic applications if the stem cells dont arise from the person who is getting helped by it. You need to do a little more reading on stm cells and in particular the theory behind it as well as looking at both religous and scientific resources before you can really write this paper on stem cell research.
