Please keep in mind that they do nip. I stopped mine from doing that in a couple of weeks by flicking it on the nose when it would do that. They also like to dig and will dig holes under thing, so be careful and have fun! I know I did!!!

They are sold at pet stores, call around to your local pet stores and ask if they sell them. The price is around $75-100 last time I bought one was 5 years ago though. They eat ferret food found at any pet store and also dry cat food. They sell ferret cages at the pet stores too. I have a 4 story ferret cage that can be broken down. I have seen some people use big fish tanks also. Make sure you let him out everyday if you go with a smaller cage. Ferrets LOVE to get into things, expect him to want to explore anywhere and everywhere if you let him walk around the house.
I have only had one ferret who nipped out of 6 ferrets so they aren't all like that, but they can be trained not to. Oh, and they sleep a lot, more than cats and dogs, but they do love to play.

There is only one 'breed' of ferret you can get. And in reality...there are no breeds. Amongst ferret folk the 'Angora Ferret' is the only domestic ferret up for controversy. Some people consider it a 'breed'. Domestic ferrets do, however, come in a variety of colors and paterns. (Which most people confuse by calling breeds.) Here are some examples for you:
http://www.ferret.org/events/colors/colorchart.shtm ***Click on the description in the orange/yellow box and it will show you a picture of that type of ferret.
You can find ferrets everywhere if they are legal where you live! Pet store, breeders (a little difficult to find), and your local animal shelter. While I always advocate for adopting a ferret, most adoptable ferrets are 'problem' or 'special needs' ferrets. I do not recommend that a first time ferret owner adopts.
Ferrets eat ferret food, ferret treats, and duck/dook soup. You can supplement with the every-now-and-again treat of peanut butter, raisins, crackers, pretzels. They must only be given a portion of these items. Small pieces -- as their body is not designed to really fully digest them.
Keep in mind that ferrets should be purchased in pairs. Ferrets can be fairly unhappy without a ferret buddy to keep them company. I recommend, at the least, a 3 or 4 level cage for two ferrets.
Ferrets on average cost between 120 to 160 dollars.
My favorite ferret on-line store: http://www.ferretdepot.com
My favorite ferret site: http://www.ferretsr1.org
Please, please, please...whatever you do, do your research. Ferrets can be expensive and challenging.
Just some extra info: It is always disturbing to me when people feed their ferrets cat food...even if it is kitten food. There are plenty of things in there that ferrets cannot digest. Not only that but cat food lacks an important nutrient called Taurine. In order to supply your ferret with Taurine, while feeding your ferret cat food, you would have to buy a ferret supplement. Until you buy the cat food plus the supplement you have spent MORE then what it would have cost you to just buy the ferret food to begin with. Try buying a quality food that is meant for ferrets, like ZooPreem. Cat food is for cats and ferret food is for ferrets. NO descent vet would EVER tell you its OK to feed a ferret purina kitten chow, especially without recommending a ferret supplement to go with it.

WHERE TO GET
i got a new ferret 3 days ago at petsmart. when i went in they had 5 that were 3 months old(the younger the better cause you can teach them better). i got this little play full ferret for $119. there is pretty much 1 breed.
FOOD
ferrets eat meat. so when you buy a food make sure 1 of the 3 first ingredients is chicken meal, chicken fat, or any thing that has to do with meat. make sure the food you buy has NO fish or corn. also make sure your food has the following
no less than 40.0% crude fiber
no less than 20.0% crude fat
no greater than 2.0% crude fiber
no greater the 10.0% moisture
the kind i buy is ZuPreem Premium Ferret Diet witch has the right ballance of stuff
CAGE
the king of really doesnt matter as long as it doesnt collaps on them, but they can be pricey. i looked i the newspaper to see if people were selling cages an i got a pertty big one for $20 but if yu want new they can range from $80-$200 depending on quoletie. the size of cage depends on how manny ferrets and how big, but remember they can get pretty big.
OTHER THING YOU MAY NEED
treats, litter pans, kitty litter (i suggest feline pines cause some litter they eat and my 2 havent eaten this kind), cage beding, toys (cat toys work to), food dish, water bottle or water dish, ferret hamocks (for sleeping in) ,and annything else you think they might like os you would like to play with them with. they really like tubes to crawl through.
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

I have two ferrets, and I love them to death. One of them is deaf, but its not that big of a deal. There aren't really any different breeds of ferret, but there are different colors.
I got mine at PETCO, and I asked to play with them before I decided which one to take. Of course, they will all be excited to see you, and you won't be able to decide based on temperment. I just picked the cute ones.
My first ferret, Emmy is a dark eyed white with some black guard hairs. Shes a definite sweetheart. My second ferret, Sybil (named after the psycho lady with the 16 personalities) is Satan in a little fur coat.
I feed mine Purina Kitten Chow. I have had it confirmed with the vet that it is safe to feed them, and it is just as good and cheaper than premium ferret food.
Mine live in a 3 level cage. Two levels would probably be enough for one, but ferrets are very social animals and do better with a play mate. As long as you have a litterbox and a hammock or sleep sack, they'll be happy in their cage. (As for litter, I have found that cheap alfalfa rabbit food in pellet form works great. Just put some in a litterbox and flush it down the toilet every few days. They like to dig in sand, so kitty litter just doesnt work)
My ferrets both ran me about $130, and the cage was pretty pricey. It was on sale for $99 so I don't remember the original cost.
Ferrets need lots of play time outside of their cage, and they are very hyper animals. I confine mine to my bedroom with a babygate covered in cardboard so they cant climb over it. Make sure that you ferret proof things very well. Anything on their level that they can grab, they will probably steal and hide somewhere. They hide all my stuff (mainly shoes and underwear) and their toys behind my bed!
If you need additional information, want to see pictures, or have any questions, feel free to contact me through here! I'd be happy to help!

You should be looking into getting pet ferrets. Not a ferret. You have most of the info from these other answers, but check Www.ferret.com. Go there and check prices. That should help you.

Did you attempt google? There are a lot of sites with super suggestion approximately ferrets, yet i'm going to throw in some issues. at the beginning ferrets are marvelous, haha. they are in a position to stay as much as twelve years if wholesome and cared for appropriate! in assessment to different small animals (hamsters, guinea pigs, ect) ferrets are no longer nocturnal! meaning they do no longer sleep all day and occasion at night. Ferrets will alter their time table to yours and be wide awake and energetic and desirous to play whenever you prefer to ! they gets depressed in case you go away them caged up each and all of the time, and start to chew and alter into worried. they do no longer look to be "cage animals", the cage is meant for a secure place for them to be straight away you're no longer residing house to oversee. that's advantageous to maintain them contained in the cage once you're sound asleep too. Ferrets are enormously intelligent, and can study multiple tricks, and can be muddle field knowledgeable. They get alongside super with cats and canines (supervision is a ought to), yet exposure to different exotics isn't reccomended. well-being care could be high priced if your ferret gets ill. Ferrets are truly incredibly high priced on my own (50-2 hundred counting on the place you get them). Ferrets like to be with different ferrets, and can entertain themselves on my own, in case you in basic terms have one ferret you could desire to play with it so plenty extra in many circumstances than multiple ferrets. ** Ferrets do no longer scent undesirable. if your ferret stinks, its considering the fact which you could desire to bathe the bedding many times(2x a week), feed him a perfect nutrition plan, and don't bathe your ferret, which will make him scent worse.
