I say 2 years be it military or picking up trash on the roads. after high school and before college.no exceptions regardless of family and class.

Yes absolutely. It's much better than the draft, will get people to think about community and responsibility, and could get infrastructure projects done on the cheap, and could allow people who don't have college ambition to learn useful skills.
Many modern European countries have conscription; of course, considering how large the U.S. is, it would be VERY expensive just to provide 18 year olds with a food and housing stipend (comparable to a military baracks). But it's something we need to consider.

I ALMOST agree-
One year...from a 'boot camp' to actually doing a job:
most of the time would be spent in training you how to do something ''the military way''. So- the period of service should be one year AFTER completion of basic training.

isn't just working in our society a national service? we are helping our country run smoothly and paying taxes aren't we?
