You're confundeded are you?

Well, the Mayans would have struggled to predict the first ice age because that had been and gone thousands of years before the Mayan culture flourished at its peak between 200AD and 600AD - so that's that one shot down in flames.

It is true that the Mayan calendar finishes a "long count" in December 2012 (assuming you accept that we have correctly aligned the Gregorian calendar we use now with the Mayan calendar) marking the end of a great cycle.

It is also true that there is a great planetary alignment in 2040 which is supposed to mark the end of the world; and it is true that the Muslim calendar finishes in 2076 and the Jewish calendar in 2240.

Just because a bunch of Mesoamerican astrologers said the world may end in 2012 doesn't mean its going to happen does it? I can think of several occasions in the last 10 years when some cult or other said the world was about to end and, I don't know about you, but I'm still here.

Well, your facts are wrong. The Ice Age was centuries before the Mayans ever existed. And they did not predict the end of the world. Dec 2012 is just when they ended their calendar.

They never predicted the end. Their calendar just stops. It's up to you whether or not you think this means the end. Also, they didn't predict the first ice age. The first ice age came a LONG LONG LONG time before the Mayans.

actually, funny you mention this:

Not too long ago, the History Channel had a nifty documentary on the subject of the Mayan civilization, as well as its doomsday prediction.

(Yes, I'm a History Channel nerd...)

Anywho, relate it to the "doomsday" prophesy from the Bible: there's no evidence that suggests that it was based on any scientific fact whatsoever. (either of them...) Thus, it's all about what you believe. And no one can tell you what to believe (yeah, that's right... I said it)

In my personal opinion, I think that, though the Mayan civilization was a great one indeed, I'd say they were probably better at building pyramids than making accurate doomsday predictions. Remember, nearly EVERY civilization, from the Romans to the Greeks to the Egyptians, to even the Christians have their own end-of-times theory. But, alas, it's just that: a theory.

They did not predict when the world would end... People predicted that the world would end then because the Mayan Calendar just simply stops... No prediction, nothing, just plain as day stops. Just because the calendar ends does not mean it is going to be the end of the world.

Below is a Mayan time-line. The last Ice age took place long before they became a civilization or carved a calender. The end of the Calender is just the mundane reason that they ran out of Rock. There are pictures, look for yourself.

B.C.E.
2600
Maya civilization begins.
2000
The rise of the Olmec civilization, from which many aspects of Maya culture are derived. Village farming becomes established throughout Maya regions.

C.E.
700
Writing is developed in Mesoamerica.
400
The earliest known solar calendars carved in stone are in use among the Maya, although the solar calendar may have been known and used by the Maya before this date.
300
The Maya adopt the idea of a hierarchical society ruled by nobles and kings.
100
The city of Teotihuacan is founded and for centuries is the cultural, religious and trading centre of Mesoamerica.
50
The Maya city of Cerros is built, with a complex of temples and ball courts. It is abandoned (for reasons unknown) a hundred years later and its people return to fishing and farming.

The Mayan calendar ends in December 2012. That doesn't necessarily mean the end of the world. If the Mayan civilization had survived another (bah I can't think of their team for a decade offhand) few dozen years, they would have started to figure out what came next.

the mayans were around long after the first iceage not before. it sounds like codswallop to me frankly. remember the world was supposed to end in the year 1000, then 1914, 1968, 1978, 1999, 2000 etc. nostradamus` last prediction was for around 3758ad so we still have a way to go.

Keep in mind that people have been predicting the end of the world since the beginning of the world... and it hasn't come true yet. A lot of people thought the world would end 12/31/1999 and that Y2K would wipe out the world's computer systems... but nothing happened.
So don't believe every prediction you hear.

It was actually Dec. 21st, so it would be 12/21/12. I kinda believe it, but I'm not sure. Anyway, the idea sure freaks me out. Don't get too worried though.

Remember how every said that horrible things would happen on 6/6/06 and nothing happened? Yeah, it might be that sorta thing. Y'know, people get worried, pressure builds, there's tons of anxiety, and people think they're gonna die. But then when the day comes, nothing happens.
