To all the Americans that answered - the Human Rights bill adopted by the UK is very different from yours.
It was well intentioned but the Government were told from the outset that lawyers would use it as a means of protecting their clients and mitigating sentencing. This is exactly what has happened.
I do not believe that anyone should automatically give up their human rights if convicted of a crime. However, our justice system is too lenient, too politically correct and too concerned about the rights of the criminal. Couple this with already overcrowded prisons, a police force that spends too much time filling out compliance forms, is low on morale and has been told to chase easy targets to keep Government figures looking good and you have the law and order crisis that is now here.

I think that the Americans who have answered this question don't realise that we are referring to the UK and this concerns what is happening here. We have many murders now being committed by immigrants to this country and we should have the right to deport them. Philip Lawrence was an inspirational Head Master who was slaughtered for coming to the aid of one of his pupils. He was a man that this country could ill afford to lose. What do we get in exchange someone who was a hardened thug when he was sixteen, the son of an Italian Criminal. Italy is a member of the EU and there is no good reason why he should not go back there. I don't care if he has spent most of his life in Britain, he is not British and he abused his position in this country. So what if he doesn't know anyone in Italy tough!! That is no reason for him to stay here. The needs of the Lawrence family should come first. Do you know that some stupid Social worker even asked his widow to tell this useless thug that she forgave him as it would make him feel better! You couldn't make it up!

What comes next once the human rights are taken away. Do you become an animal to be tortured and abused. Remeber one thing before you do that .
Some crimes committed are not on purpose or in a moment of passion or anger. All of us have done something we instantly regreted. What about the innocent who is convicted by accident or on purpose.
What of thier human rights. we punish with a flawed system and to much political correctness the victim should be taken care of first but we dont take away human rights of the accused or convicted.
If we do we loose even this flawed system of justice and our AND MOST IMPORTANTLY our own HUMANITY. Then there is no end to the atrosities we will commit in the name of justice. We then are no better than the criminal. we must balence all this with asystem run by the most flawed thing of all, "People" !!

That sounds like good reasoning, but with the insanely huge number of laws that we have, and the fact that we get hundreds more every day makes me weary of agreeing with you. In order to protect me from myself, I'm sure there are a ton of things that are illegal that I've done, like repairing my deck without a permit, speeding 1mph over the limit, forgetting to have the headlights on while the windshield wipers are going (a new law out here in ca) just to name a few off the top of my head. I'd hate to lose my rights because of those!
The solution, less stupid laws! I'm voting for Ron Paul, it's at least a step in the right direction. Otherwise the nanny government will soon be dictating what I can eat, do for fun, you name it! I'd hate to lose my human rights just because I violate nanny laws!

Not any crime, but the more severe crimes, definately yes!
Bang them up in a cell 2x2 with a tiny window and keep them in there 23 hours of the day; or deport them if possible.
And let the victims family have a say in what happens to them if they want to.
BearDog4314........ I don't care how he gets treated in his own country - he should be beaten and thrown out of here - he's costing us taxpayers money all the while he's over here!!

What do you mean "So called people", if they are not people what are they? This kind of thinking led to to the killing of Jews, Russians, gypsies mentally ill and homosexuals by the Nazis, it led to a million hacked to death by their neighbours in Rwanda.
Punishment must fit the crime, if we take revenge we are not Christian and have descended to the level of the criminal. Also it sets up a cycle of revenge. Let the law take it's course and concentrate on preventing and detecting crime rather than devising ever more elaborate punishing techniques.

The British justice system is absolutely hilarious. Life doesn't mean life. Time and time again, murders get away with minimal time in jail - particularly if the offender is young. We need to adopt the american justice system. Life means life i.e you will not be released for the rest of your life. You take a life, you pay with your own. It's a joke that that Italian guy is allowed to stay here - so he doesn't speak Italian and doesn't have any family or friends in Italy - dideems. He murdered Mr Lawrance in cold blood - that the hell is he doing getting released. It's the very reason why crime is totally out of control in the UK.

See, the thing about human rights is that they are for all humans. ALL humans. Otherwise they would be white, heterosexual, Christian male rights. I am certain that your news source is either the Mail or the Express. Try this instead http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6955071.stm
barbdorje, which capital crimes do you mean? We have none! Murder hasn't been a capital offence since 1965 and all capital punishment was abolished in 1998!

No to the first statement. As for the murderer of Philip Lawrence, I don't know the details, but is he going to get worse treatment here or in his native country? There may be more justice here in throwing him in a cell for the rest of his life, and then deporting his corpse in 50 years.
Human Rights are for EVERYONE, it's what makes America important. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
