It's science fiction, that's for sure.
If it were real, Colonel Reynolds, USAF, wouldn't be dressed in Marine Corps utilities as leader of SG-3 ;)
The scary thing is, the longer I spent in the military, the more plausible the overall concept of the Air Force being in charge of the 'gate became!
However, as far as the show is concerned, they just make it up as they go along.

Just about everything we use today at some time in history would have been considered SciFi, Magic or Fiction.
People need to be more careful about what they call impossible.
