Maybe in some sort of local magazine and write what neighborhood it's for. If your still in school, try the school newspaper. I think fliers should do the trick though.

When I advertize for my local theater, I put bulletins on myspace, notes on facebook, and I go to each local highschool and give the drama or chorus teachers a copy of the flier and details. The first two attract people that I know. The last one is pretty effective and it attracts High School kids. Good luck!

How local? And what caliber of talent do you hope to attract? You can put an ad in your local paper, you can also put an ad on Backstage.com which will show up for those searching for auditions in your specific area. There's also www.actorsaccess.com
Be sure to know all the details before you go to place your ad or at least have all the details on a website so you can direct people there and you can have more info. Have the date(s) of the audition & time, start date of rehearsals, performance dates, breakdown of your characters, the synopsis of your show, etc. What you would like your actors to have ready (16 bars of music, a 1 minute monologue, be prepared to cold read from the script, be prepared to dance, etc.)

Around here the auditions for college and community theater shows are in several local newspapers. It shouldn't cost anything if they write it up as a story. Also, make flyers and post them in places where potential actors might hang out. Bookstores, coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, bars...you may also be able to advertise on the radio if there is a station that does morning talk show type stuff. Call them up and check it out. Good luck with the show, whatever it is.
