I've had this myself so I know what it's like. Try to stick to a sensible diet. Certain foods ie Turkey, bananas and sprouts are a good source of tryptophan (I think), which produces serotonin. Find someone you can talk to whenever you need to - a professional counselor if need-be. I've posted a few of links below, which I hope you'll find helpful. My depression went so I'm sure yours will too.

Arrange your life around things that are positive. Be careful what you watch on T.V. Don't read the paper or watch the news.
I battled depression and these are some of the best habits I broke.
We watch more comedies, less news.
And we i.e. My wife and I have agreed to only hang around with people who have good attitudes.
It is working, I have even stopped drinking since this has begun. I was an alcoholic for 25 years.
I hope you beat this depression into the ground and find your peace.

There's no difference between modern day depression and "olden times" depression. Surround yourself with positive people, exercise helps, so does eating right. If you need more help, see a therapist or talk to your doctor about antidepressants.
