The Emergency section of the hospital are sending sick pregnant women away because they say "THey have not got the facilities" even though the best place for a sick pregnant women is a hospital where they can check blood pressure, temperature, monitor the baby's movements and if there is something wrong bundle them into an ambulance. I see a political issue about to errupt of some woman and her baby dies because this hospital negated its duty of care.
I am going to write to my local paper - whats your views

I am not talking baout healthy expectant mothers - I am talking about sick pregnant women. Pre-eclampsia toximia can set in - in the last weeks of pregnancies and other complications. If a woman turns up at this hospital in my oppinion she should be checked out and then transported by ambulance to a better equipped hospital and not turned away. If she has no transport and sick - she could go home and die. This hospital has a duty of care. If the pregnant womn is sick give her basic medical care and then send her somewhere else by ambulance.

Veritas: No disrespect but I think you are one of the very lucky pregnant women who have no complications. I bet you dont get hypremisis gravadia, pre-exclampsia toxima that warrants 2 emergency caesares or get gestational diabetes or have to take tablets for blood pressure and i still stand by the fact if a sick woman present and needing to be checked out they should be and not turned away. This is the hospitals duty of care!!

If the hospital does not have the staff and resources to handle births, then I think it is GOOD that they are being honest and letting women know, instead of stretching themselves too thin and trying to provide care that they are not equipped to.

There are other options for birthing, you know. Women can go to a midwife for prenatal and delivery, or opt for home births. Or they can take extra care with their birth plan to allow for a longer drive to the hospital. In the "old days" many women would stay with a friend or relative who lived very close to the hospital in their last weeks of pregnancy - that way they were close when they went into labor.

Don't make this a political issue for goodness sakes! People are always going overboard these days, ready to point the finger and slap lawsuits on others. Give the hospital the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure they will do what they can to direct pregnant women to the care they need.

I have 4 children and only set foot in a hospital ONE time. Hospitals are for emergencies and sick people, NOT for healthy expectant mothers.

That is not right. In Los Angeles there is also a closed hospital (actually it's the E.R. and they also send patients to 13 other hospitals. They send them through ambulance. But I don't think they put a bunch on a ambulance. Are there at least other hospitals around? or a chopper available?

Where is this at? That sounds frightening. Also curious to know if whereever this is, do they have a country-wide insurance like Canada?
