I posted a question about a dream I had, and 2 people said I should consider writing, and I have tried before. Writing with paper and pen is hard for me, especially because the pen never can explain whats going on in my head.

Learn to type fast. I can't keep up with pen and paper either, but I learned to type 85 wpm which helped me tremendously in writing. I do know several authors who write longhand. Nelson de Mille writes his books longhand. I have no idea how he does it. He must be a very patient man. I have met him - and he seems that way.

Outlines also help a lot. They give you some kind of guidance to follow.

Many writers have odd times when they are inspired. Oddly, just before falling asleep and just when you are waking up are common. I keep a notebook beside my bed so I can make notes at both times. It is not at all unusual for me to turn the light back on 3 or 5 times to write more stuff down. That is when my characters "talk" to me. Also when I am driving. I got very sick of pulling into Mc Donald's to write things down, so I now keep a mini tape recorder in my car. It is a huge help.

If you jot the basics down, you can always flesh out the ideas later on. The main thing is not to let the idea get away. I have kind of developed my own shorthand - totally unreadable to others but it makes sense to me.

I also ghostwrite for a well known sports figure and I am used to reading his notes and listening to his thoughts and taking down notes while he talks.

It is all about skill. I truly believe all writers are born with the gift. However you have to take that gift and hone and train it into a skill and a talent to make it functional. It takes time. I have been writing since I knew what a pen and paper were for. I didn't develop these skills overnight. Just keep working at it until you develop your own way of working. Don't get frustrated - ideas get away from all of us now and then. If they are good ideas, they come back.

Good luck. Pax- C

Writing is both a skill and a talent. By your comment I'd say you have the talent you just need to work on the skill. Do some research on what it take to be a writer and take some classes.

I started with journalism and creative writing classes in college but you may also be able to find writing groups and classes at the high school lvl or within you community. Find some Friends with similar interests.

I found that for ideas about writing when you have no access to pen and paper or when your pen won't fly...an MP3 player with voice record. Just ramble on whatever is on your mind. Then download and transcribe to Word. You would be amazed at how much your hand misses that your brain can conjure up. Good luck, I find it is useful to keep it with me even at bedside. I have woken from dreams that are very vivid and spoken them in. Sometimes it is gibberish, other times solid ideas. GO HARD!!

Start a journel and record your dreams. I'm a writer too, please visit my site at http://www.rubysbooks.i8.com. My book started as a 3 page short story from a vision that I received but it is actually the origin of my family history.
