A lot of Americans seem to frown upon staying at home with your child. Why? They seem to think you're lazy, uneducated, in an abusive marriage, and you're strange rather than a good mother and having the luxury to give your child the best. Also, why is maternity leave so short in this country? American women seem to be power hungry and money hungry rather than good mothers and good wives.

I don't know anyone who looks down on SAH Moms.

I wish I could do it.

Most people in America can't AFFORD to stay at home with their kids.

I have heard of some women with advanced degrees who stop working to stay at home... sometimes it seems like a waste of a good education, but most of them do, eventually, return to the workforce...

No body I know looks down on them. I know how hard it can be and I know how easy it can be. I was one before I divorced. Now I am the sole supporter of my two sons that are almost grown now. While I was a stay at home mom I got bored at times when all the work was done and I felt like I wasn't doing anything productive. I was a stay at home mom while my children were very young though. I wish I was a Stay at home mom during the school aged years because there were more things to do for them in those years than when they were infant to toddler ages. They were in sports, plays, or on field trips, and other things that made it hard for me to make. I missed a lot of things, mostly because I had to work as a mother and a father. I think it's all according to the mom and the situation at hand.

It's not that it's looked down upon it's just that stay at home Mom's make it sound like they are doing something incredible. Mom's who work actually work 40 hrs a week and get all the same stuff done you do....imagine that?
Most stay at home Moms are just as self righteous as you are. Case and point is in your last sentence you assume because a woman works she is power/money hungry and not a good mother or wife!

I feel the same way. I quit my job when I had my baby and people are always asking me if I'm not bored and regarding me as lazy. Let me tell you all, it's not that easy. It would be much easier for me to go to work and dump my kid off at the babysitter's, but when I got pregnant, I decided I would be the one to raise my child not some stranger. And I remember being a latchkey kid- I don't want the same for my child.

I am a single mother...there's no way that I can afford to stay home with my child...I wish I could. I think being able to stay home with ones child would br great. Day care is very expensive.
