If we assume that exrtaterrestrials are here on Earth, how can civilian scientists, professors, or the general public go about studying them? I would love to know more about alien society, alien biology, and extraterrestrial science/technology but I do not have an alien being who will talk to me, nor do I have a dead alien body, nor do I have any alien technology to examine. Some people believe that the government has bodies and spaceships but even if they do, the military is not likely to permit civilian scientists to examine them or let the public come and see them.
So what can a professor/scientist/researcher do to learn more about these aliens? Even if many people are convinced that extraterrestials are here, so what! It seems that we can never learn more about them in order to improve our society, our science, or even satisfy our curiosity.

If we assume that extraterrestrials are here on earth, we do so on the basis of very scant evidence.

Contact organizations like MUFON (Mutual UFO Network). They take the subject seriously and think physical evidence is possible. You could also see about contacting abductee groups and remove 'implants'. That seems the most likely success for any of us finding actuall physical evidence. Of course, evidence is meaningless. It won't convince anyone. It will get you laughed out of your field of study. So hire a 'ghost-researcher' to take those hits for you. Trying to 'prove' something that the existing population paradigm is resistant to is futile. The public is not ready to accept such evidence. Whether this is an induced state of disbelief is the matter of conspiracy theories. If you want to find out just to find out, go for it. If you want to find out to change the minds of the people of Earth, forget about it. You know? I'm not even sure the 'aliens' are from another planet. I'm not so sure they aren't just masks worn by humans who have built the saucers. There are so many layers of deceipt, misinformation, trickery, lies, and that's just what we can piece together from how they act when being observed. They have a good cover. It's good enough that if any of them slip up and spill some real info, it's impossible to tell. I'd like to learn more, but I know it must all be taken with a grain of salt, some healthy level of scepticism. I know for a fact they exist, and I know for a fact that they lie really well.

I think one of my neighbors is an alien trying to live among humans. He's not quite right. Or he might be an alien/human love child. He's definitely not quite right. Plus, his house is filled with detailed blueprints he has drawn of space ships. I'm not kidding. He freaks me out.
