For example, does a 32A and a 34A really use the same cup?

But when I'm comparing two bras of the same brand and style, I hold the 32A up to the 34A, and the 34A cup is obviously bigger than than the 32A cups.

I fit into the 32A better, but the 34A cup is bigger and gives more padding and coverage, so it actually makes my breasts look larger under clothes. But I thought the cups were supposed to be the same size no matter what the number was. ie. a 32A, 34A, 36A, and 38A would all use the exact same cup.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Your observation is correct, the cup in a 34A is one cup size larger than that in a 32A, the 34A is actually equal to a 32B.

There is a one cup differential between bands and equal cup sizes.

Like this (only referring to the cup, not the band)

30B = 32A = 34AA
32B = 34A = 36AA
34B = 36A = 38AA
...

36DD = 38D = 40C
36D = 38C = 40B

As the band gets larger, you need one cup smaller to have the same cup size. As the band gets smaller, you need one cup larger to have the same size cup.

The reason is that the cup is actually not based on a standard measurement (like an A cup is 6" deep) but is instead based on a ratio of proportion of the difference between over bust measurement and full bust measurement.

The cup size has nothing to do with the band size. In order to get the proper cup size you need to measure the band size and then the actual breast size. The difference is how you get the cup size.

A= 1 inch
B= 2 inches
C= 3 inches
D = 4 Inches
DD= 5 inches

So if you are a 34B your breast should measure 36 inches.
Hope that makes sense.

I used to get really confused by that, i think the cups are proportionally sized to the band, or at least that's what one of th bra fitting people told me. If your confused to what size you should wear just go to like Vitoria secret and get a fitting, it takes like two seconds and they'll even suggest diff rent bras for what purpose you want them for (i.e everyday wear or to look bigger)

Go get measured. I wouldn't recommend going to Victoria Secret though, I hear they aren't very accurate (and they sometimes tell me the wrong size). I would suggest Nordstroms or a more 'upscale' department store or lingerie store.

You can't tell about sizes on anything anymore. Remember, most are made in China, anymore, you are lucky if they are the size that is written on the tag.
