make GENUINE comments, about specific things. its always nicer to hear "wow, i wish i could do grand jetes that high" over "nice jump". point out what makes their dancing special!

Make sure your praise is true and honest, because people can always tell when it's not. Try to praise people when they have been struggling to get something right and finally do.
