Yes I always say yes because I don't want to seem weak to them or vulnerable.

What you answer should depend upon who is doing the asking ... if it's a doctor trying to find out if you are 'sick' then you must answer truthfully, and 'in detail,' where if it is just an acquaintance and you are 'not sure' of them and their 'attitude' toward you, a simple 'I'm okay,' is the 'right answer' ... you may not 'be totally okay' (you could be sick, or in serious debt, or your boyfriend may have 'dumped you' for a guy) but you are still 'okay' as far as 'still alive' so you won't be 'totally lying' ... you'll just be 'editing the truth' to fit the 'person' and the 'occasion.'

Yes, with the exception my sisters and my husband.

The reason being, is when strangers ask they are only being polite, and they don't really want to hear your problems they have problems of their own.

Besides, it is none of their business, if you tell then something is wrong your going to make them feel the need to try to help.

It's better to just say, I'm fine thank you, and let it go.

I say yes.

Even when I am ok, the question makes me sad.

I know that most don't really want to know, that they would shy away if I told them I wasn't ok. It makes me feel lonely knowing that they only ask the question as a greeting.

It depends on the person. If it's my boyfriend and I want him to get an answer out of me, I'll say no at first and then he'll pry and it will come out. If it's a person I don't really want to talk to (like someone at work) I will say yeah I'm fine to get them off my back.

I don't get asked that question very much, I have developed a closed book face for public! :) At home though, I cannot hide my emotions from my husband, and he always asks when I am not ready to answer. So then I tell him that I am fine.

I usually say yes because I don't feel like going into a whole conversation about what's wrong.

Yes. Typically the person is concerned, but they really don't want a crying mess on their hands. I'd hate to put that on someone. Funny, I don't mind if it happens to me though.

It depends on who is asking. Some ask out of courtesy, not wanting or expecting to actually hear how you are, while others may genuinely want to know... you can usually tell the difference...

Yes, if I don't want to discuss it. If I do I say, "Well,I could certainly be better" which naturally dovetailes right into a fulsome account of my recent woes. A clever way to vent,no?
