Government aid is contrary to the founding principles of our Republic. This nation was founded as a place for people to succeed or fail on their own protected from taxation and oppressive government. A nation where the rule of law was applicable to all.

Today we have a system where those who work support those who have political pull or can cry loudest as victims. Congress no longer stewards our tax monies as a trust but as a limitless vote buying game. Every dollar given to someone comes from someone else's purse. This is not money given voluntarily either but taken by threat of force. Taxes in this nation have historically been low so to allow people the fruit of their labors. Government needed little as its only real job was enforcing the law and defending the seaways and borders.

All that changed since the 1930s. Today most Americans expect aid when they build a house on a flood plain, tidal flat, or hillside and nature takes its course. Today most Americans expect that retirement money will be put aside for them so they don't have to save. Today most Americans feel the "rich" should pay more in taxes to be fair. Today most Americans feel everyone is entitled to college monies....the list goes on forever.

Government aid to the "less fortunate" is a subjective...what constitutes less fortunate? For many people today that term is very elastic and damn the cost to the nation and our resulting loss of freedoms...

Because of social security and government pensions that people have worked for and therefore are entitled to.

All other social welfare programs are not entitlements but just welfare. By definition this is taking money from some people and giving it to others that have done nothing to earn it. This includes subsidies for housing, steel, (any industry), food or whatever.
However these welfare give aways have been lumped into the earned entitlements by the right wing as a way to cut them off or end all of them; even those that have been earned as part of working and paying in towards them.

And yes it is right wingers that want to cut "entitlements", as long as it doesn'e include the subsidies to their indutrial cohorts.

I have no idea what Gordon Gecko is talking about but entitlements have nothing to do with Republicans in power in the 90's and early 2000s. The use of the word entitlements in government came about in the 60's and refers to government payments as rights such as Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, etc. Entitlements take up 2/3 of the Federal Budget.
In fact the Johnson administration came up with the word

Republicans are good and notorious at being able to redefine things like that. Its for the same reason all of a sudden a few years back you started hearing libs this and libs that all the time. According to them any government program that is not military in nature is an entiltlement especially if helps makes the lives of individual americans better. But what they never address is what kind of world and country we would live in without those things being around. I guess they are ok with a post apocapolyptic type scenario with no rules dog eat dog, old people crawling around in the streets, and no one doing anything except looking out for #1.

Welfare was supposed to be a stop gap if you were having problems.

Then you have the people that abuse them. Years ago if you were on welfare you would get a visit from a case worker, and if you had something new EX. table lamp whatever, they would ask where it came from. If you said so and so they would go there to confirm that. If you lied you were thrown off for cheating the system.

Now no one check up on any of this. And you can bet your bottom dollar they have cheats out there costing us tax payers money.

It's still aide to the less fortunate- Republicans have used the language "entitlement" to make charity sound dirty. Of course, they have no problems being charitable to the Extremely fortunate.

So true and I wish I knew the answer to that. It's gotten out of hand. Aide is one thing, but a lifetime of entitlement is quite another. It's just one more indicator that we're headed into Socialism.

If your able-bodied and can work, WORK. Heck, for years, I worked two jobs to make ends meet. It was tough, but darned if I EXPECTED society to finance me when I was able to do it myself.

People have no pride and they're being told that they are 'entitled'.

Ask American corporations, and the 12+ million wetbacks, because they more than anyone else are claiming they are "entitled" to it.

Republicans had the Presidency and Legislature from 2001 to 2007.

Why not end the entitlement society?

Congress has made those a permanent part of the budget. They cannot be touched without new legislation.
