I LOVE this song ~ especially the full length album version {the one on compelation albums is often edited}
It's all about the death of Buddy Holly, and the effect it had on Don, and the effect he feels it had on music.
I couldn't believe people actually liked Madonna's cover of it ~ she should have left this classic well alone!

Don McLean, hes the man, LOVE this song.
Drove my chevy to the levy but the levy was dry.

truthfully everyone above is right, yet an attractive lyric is with regard to the "jester" who sang for the King and Queen, which became a connection with Bob Dylan. The music is packed with symobolism, could be a competent element to truly analyze in case you have an pastime. peace :)
