What parenting books would you recommend for a first time parent? Also, what books on breastfeeding would you recommend? What are the strengths of these books?

What to Expect the First Year is great, has advice, what to expect, nutrition info, advice on common illnesses, etc. A great reference guide. I like the way it reads - it asks a 'question' then answers it. It's broken out by month and has a great reference section in the back.

I also like "The Happiest Baby on the Block" (Harvey Karp I think), "Sleep" by Brazleton (?) and Love and Logic "Practical Parenting from Birth to Age 6" or something similar.

There are a lot of books out there on these topics. I would go to Borders (or another big book store) and look in the sections you are interested in. (That's what I did!) They have many to choose from. I would get a breastfeeding book that is for new Moms that list all the "basic" things you need to know. They will be informative. But I have found that asking other Mom's is VERY helpful. Or realitives that have children. Good Luck!!!

"The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding".. by La Leche League International is pretty much the foremost leader in breastfeeding education, and support... they don't do a lot of their own research, but they have a huge international advisory board which scours all the reasearch done by the global medical community to come up with all the best and most accurate information.

Beware of baby trainers... like the Ferber stuff and BabyWise... they're far from baby friendly and breastfeeding friendly... they're mostly to satisfy the wants of adults, instead of the needs of the children.

Dr. William Sears has a bunch of books on a ton of subjects, he's extremely into breastfeeding and anything by him or his wife and sons are great.

Dr. Karp's Happiest Baby books are great. I think they even have videos now. Great for calmin, and even just not losing your self esteem as a new parent.

Also the ones called something linke the Baby's Owners Manuel. It has good straightfoward info.

I also liked one by a Dr. Perlmutter, How to Raise your Childs IQ by Kindergarten. Good info on breastfeeding and early learning. Also on toys & toxins.

I wouldnt get one on breastfeeding, if so get in from the library. So much of that info is online at Kellymom, or better yet go to a le leche group. I breastfeed, and had a very tough time with a preemie, and its really the kind of thing you get from the nurses at the hospital or a consultant, kind of a "hands on" learning activity. But I applaud you tying to prepare.

DOCTOR SEARS!!!!!! Sorry for yelling. Doctor Sears is a practicing pediatrician who has also raised eight children with a very hands-on, loving, no-nonsense philosophy. I have four kids, and I've read a lot of books by a lot of so-called experts, and Dr. Sears is the first I've come across who isn't full of poo.

Not really an answer, but don't you think it strange that the highest form of life on this planet is the only one that needs to be taught how to care for it's young?
