I want to get something for my wife spur of the moment, we are going through a rough patch and she is leaving on a biz trip tomorrow. I was thinking flowers, but they'll be dead by the time she gets home.

A nice card, and a nice little necklace from Brighton. Something she can wear and touch while she's away from you.

Hope all goes well. And remember this little distance (her business trip) might just make the heart grow fonder.

as a woman, i always enjoy experiences rather than things. so, arrange a night out when your wife arrives back home. you can do a little or a lot, so i'll give you a few options and you can tailor it to your budget and how over the top you wanna get.

-meet her at the airport if possible. if she has a late night flight, don't plan anything for that night (she'll be tired). instead, take her home, run a hot bubble bath (have tea light candles and bubble bath at the ready). also get a book you know she wants to read or some of her fave magazines so she can read while soaking.

-the next morning, take her to breakfast or brunch or bring her breakfast in bed. let her know that you have a fun day planned, but tell her it's all a surprise. no details...

-do something you both enjoy (museum, matinee theatre production, etc.) if it's outdoors, like a festival or something, take the weather into account. have a back up plan. don't do something that you usually do anyway, like the state fair or a car show. do something atypical.

-depending on where you live, look into hot air balloon rides. these are unexpected, relatively inexpensive, and creates adrenaline rushes and fosters bonding. studies show that couples maintain the passion of new love by experiencing new things together. the adrenaline and excitement your wife feels for the experience, will subconsciously be associated with you which will recreate the heady rush of new love. if hot air balloons are out, consider rock climbing (even if it's indoors. take a beginner class), rapelling, white water rafting, river tours.

-since you both may be physically pooped after the excursions, you should already have rented movies waiting at home along with her favorite treat or snack. pick one of each to guarantee that you will have something no matter what the mood: one romantic comedy, one drama, one thriller. if she likes action, pick one of those in place of the ones listed above.

-leave a note inside of her work bag/briefcase that she won't find until work monday morning. this will be a bright spot in her day and will be totally unexpected.

-don't expect or push for sex. just be romantic. obviously, if she initiates, don't turn her down. now is the time for hand-holding, hugs, and cuddling. romance her again since it seems you may need rebuild the foundation of the relationship.

How about writing her a love letter, and putting it in her suitcase?

Tell her, simply, and lovingly, what you appreciate about her, and how much you care for her. Nothing crazy or over the top. Just speak from your heart, and tell her what you love about her.

It will not only remind HER there is still love there, it will remind YOU, why you are with her to begin with.

Slip something into her luggage, like a gift certificate to your favorite restaurant or concert tickets or something you two can do together when she gets back, then leave a note saying you can't wait to go together when she gets back, you love her, etc.
