Me & two of my girl friends have planned to go to Birmingham for a night out this weekend. Weve planned to go to 'The Works' night club, which is in Broad street i think, correct me if i'm wrong. I was really excited about going, but have now been advised against the idea by another friend & some members of my family. They told me that Birmingham is quite a dangerous place to go, lots of stabbings & high crime rate. I know some parts of Birmingham are rougher than others, but is this the case for the area & club that we are going to? Would be really greatfull for some advice, as i can't decide wether to go or not. Would be good to hear from people that actualy live in Birmingham & know the area well. We are all from North Devon by the way, so are not city people ourselves :-)

Sugar: You have got nothing to worry about, just take the train to Birmingham New Street. Take a taxi or walk to Broad St and start partying. You can start at Hardrock hotel and club hobbing all the way to MIC.
There is also a Travelodge and couple of other decent hotels on Broad Street if you need to stay overnight.
There are cops on Broad St. after midbight I would not worry about anything particularly you are in group.
Been there done that.

Birmingham is really not like that. There is the odd scuffle, burt that happens everywhere.
If you go to Broad St i'm sure you will be just fine and if you decide that your not keen on The Works there are loads of other places to go where there is a young and friendly vibe. There are loads of people around and security on every door of every bar/club. Also wardens patrol the whole street. As long as your sensible you will be ok.
I've been out in a lot of cities and towns, and to be honest i have seen far worse in smaller towns. i live in Birmingham and have grown up there too, and it is really not what people say its like.
Its just like going out anywhere else, there are risks all over as long as you don't get involved in any scuffles you will be just fine.
The only advice I would give you is have a wicked time, enjoy yourselves, dress up glam and be happy and also try to leave about 15 minutes before closing time to avoid the mad rush and queues for taxis.
Oh yes, and while you are visiting make sure you visit the shops at the bull ring and through the city centre (www.bullring.co.uk)
Have a great time.

I live 2 mins from Broad Street so I see the comings and goings.
Broad Street is far safer than smaller towns' drinking areas, there are civilian Street Wardens who alert police at the first sign of trouble. Also potential flashpoints like chippies and taxi ranks have marshals/police. One recent problem is that the street sometimes gets a bit clogged with smokers outside - patience is a virtue.
The Works is a mainstream club with a bit of the 'meat market' element to it, if you're after this, fine. If you want something classier I'd suggest the Arcadian.

i lived in the birmingham area for half my life and many of my relatives still live there, there isnt alot of stabbings, but any city is more dangerous than more rural areas. i moved away because of hustle and bustle was too much for me, prefer the quieter life now. my son does alot of clubbing in birmingham and last weekend he had his mobile phone stolen, he wasnt too pleased, he hadnt left it on a table or anything it was in his pocket. but he still enjoys clubbing there, so if you want to give it a try, just be on your guard, catch taxis to places, watch your drinks, dont take anything silly so that you are alert. and maybe you will enjoy yourselves, have fun if you go

I think its okay, but just like any other city, don't go off anywhere. I can only remeber 1 stabbing in that area, and stabbing isn't the major concern. Just be sensible and stick to where the wardens are if tis your first time. Have fun

i live in birmingham
be careful going out at night
local people will tell you birmingham is the friendliest place in the world...........well thats what the people of sierra leone will tell you
its a s hit hole, and the locals are either backward red necks teenage hooligans, or irritating students.
that includes the suburbs and the city centre aswell, no where is safe in bham at night, even outside the marriott, hyatt, holiday inn or other top hotels
