Many people have a mental block when it comes to numbers, and computation in particular. Also, mental arithmetic is becoming a lost art since calculators do the work that pencil and paper once did. When a person has to figure it by hand (not by a machine), the process is more real and the ability to add, multiply, subtract, and divide is facilitated.

because in this sum the answer becomes a fraction 49 1/2... We tend to like to think in whole numbers. even though fractions are generally easy sums- many people get psycologically freaked out when trying to figure them out and so logic goes out the window.

I don't have a problem with it, but I was brought up in pre-calculator days and mental arithmetic was the norm. Nowadays most people seem to need calculators to work out the simplest of sums.

Becuase the government keeps on lowering the average, making people think they are doing well when in reality they arn't really smart. And yes 49.5 is correct.
