Ok, I'm going to start jumping training next month, but for my lessons, I need a helmet. My instructor says I need an ASTM/SEI approved helmet. I have to pay with it with my own money and I've tried looking on the internet for one. Can anyone give me an estimate of how much a helmet for a 13 year old girl would cost? In case it matters, I'm pretty sure my head is average sized, lol.

Ok, thanks for the helmet advice, but now I have to ask something else. If I'm going to jump should I buy jodhpurs or breeches, or could I stick with jeans. I have a pretty big budget saved up and I would like to be comfortable as possible so I can pay attention to the jumps.

I also am the happy owner of several different Troxel helmets. They fit well, they are light and they don't cost too much.
I have done alot of shopping on eBay and the internet for various horse things, but I would NOT buy a helmet via the internet unless I had tried on the exact brand and model elsewhere and knew how it fits. The difference from one brand to the next in sizing is enormous, and you are going to love the fit of some, tolerate the fit in others and down-right dislike some brands. You won't know unless you try them on.
I also would be cautious in buying second hand. Helmets of all sorts can appear totally fine, but if they are in an accident the interior cushioning value can be destroyed even though the outside looks good. Even being dropped the wrong way when you're holding them can affect their strength. So helmets are something I would buy only new, or if second hand from someone who I knew would be 100% honest about the past uses.
As for costs, the cheaper models of Troxel can be bought for $50 and then they can go up to over $150 if you want the velvet show type. Other brands are comparable, I would suspect you will end up spending $50-$75.
Lastly, as to breeches I would suggest buying a pair with a full seat, if you have a big enough budget. A full seat means the entire buttocks and inside leg are made of rough material such as suede, and you literally "stick" to the saddle with those type of breeches. The regular breeches only have suede at the knees and you have alot more movement and shifting in the saddle as your pant bottom is slippery against the smooth leather saddle. If you think there is ever a chance you'll show stick with the traditional greenish beige or creamy color. Some people do show with rust, navy or such but they are very unpopular and unstylish in most cases in the ring.
Happy shopping.

I sorry, but are you saying that before you stated jumping you WEREN'T using a helmet?!? If you weren't I would find another instructor, because you don't understand how dangerous that is! Just because your not jumping doesn't mean you can't fall off!
To answer your question it really depends on the price. You can get custom show helmet with all the extras blah blah blah, for hundreds of dollars. Or you get a standard, plastic covered ASTM/SEI approved helmet. for about $40. I recommend the latter as you are only doing lessons and later maybe some local shows, but nothing serious.
As for jumping in jeans... that bring back bad memories. My legs still hurt. LOL! You will be doing a lot of lessons in half seat/2 point position. Your legs will get rubbed raw if you don't get some riding breeches, so yes, I recommend them.

An IRH (International Riding Helmet) is a great helmet, and it is less expensive so it is good for lessons, but nice enough to show in. It is ASTM/SEI approved and even though you have an averaged size head it comes in all sizes so you dont have to worry about it not fitting. Also about jumping, you could use either jodhpurs or breeches, but I don't reccomend jumping with jeans, because jeans do not have enough grip to stay on over those big jumps.

No, use an actual riding helmet. They are ment for this purpose--motorcycle helmets are too bulky---stick with a riding helmet---your kids will most likely try to ditch a helmet if it is too uncomfortable to wear... I reccomend a helmet with a GPS Retention System--they offer a more customized fit which is much safer than any old style helmet without one.. Also remember that after every fall or every 2 yrs without a fall the helmet should be replaced as its safety level will decrease over time and after every trauma. Have Fun! BB

Troxel has a very, very reasonably priced ASTM approved riding helmet. It's only $30:

Riding helmets comes in different sizes so that they can fit your head as well as possible; they also come with foam inserts that can be added or removed to customize the size even more. Your best bet will be to go to to a tack store and try on the helmet, since a poorly fitting helmet won't protect you as well and will be uncomfortable.

Troxel also has several other helmets, some that are much nicer looking at various price ranges.

My ASTEM/SEI approved Troxel sport only cost about $35.00 Best investment I ever made. But make sure you get the right size to fit your head,Take a tapemeasure around your head just right on your browbone, and the match up the size of your head to the size recomandations of the manufactor,
For trail riding I ride in jeans and in trainning and everyday work outs I ride in breeches. I feel more comfortable in breeches.

Helment-Troxel is really good. Troxel Sport in specific is really cheap. You can find a nice helment through dover for $65-$80 if you look hard enough. they'll send you a catalogue for free and the'r delivery is really quick! I got my order in 3 days!
Breeches- are for more advanced riders with higher breeches and without a cuff.
Johds- are for riders with a lower boot. You have a cuff at the bottom that keeps it from going higher.

-good luck ;D

I use an Aegis for schooling and I really like it. It comes with the adjustable dial system so it can be fit exactly and fit different people in the event you lend it out.
Ironically enough - I fell off for the first time on Saturday and it protected my head quite nicely :)
I don't think I paid any more than $40 for it.. in fact I think it was about $30.
