There is a Mystery series called Gaslight Mysteries that are really good.
The first one is Murder on Astor Place and they're by Victoria Thompson. The main characters are Police Detective Sergant Frank Malloy, a widower who is not prepared for a beautiful woman who will not let him close a case unsolved, and Sarah Brandt , a widow who's husband's murder gave her a passion for justice, she is a midwife who's family is one of the richest in NYC.
The books take place at the turn of the century and are very good. The mysteries are also very good.

I really enjoy the Kushiel's Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey. Currently there is five books and I think she is working on more. It is a really great fantasy series, with intrigue, war, court politics, and an excellent love story. And the main character is a heroine. It is adult themed though. The first book in the series is Kushiel's Dart.

I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:
http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com
Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book, and a "reader's choice" list of favorite books.
I hope this helps.
