Most of the dogs mentioned would be suitable, although i wouldn't recommend a young collie with a child, they tend to get very excitable and playful and could accidentaly hurt her!
To be honest there are probably more breeds of dog that would be good than not. Obviously smaller dogs would probably be better around your daughter, but then again some large dogs (such as labradors) do make excellent family pets! But remember the smaller the dog, the more walking it needs, crazy isn't it?

what's this we're thinking of getting a dog, and then you say my husband would love a dog. Do you really want a dog or your daughter,it's a very big decision and a very big commitment, and a very expensive.. Have you seriously thought it through. what about your work commitments who will be at home with the dog. they are social animals and need company. If you have really gone through the ifs and buts then i suggest you go to a rescue centre for starters. this will give you an idea of size of dog. take all the family along. you may find just what you are looking for and be able to help an animal in need. there are some wonderful animals in need of good homes and many get along great with kids and cats. good luck.

Get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, there great dogs, I would know I have four because I liked the first two so much. But there all around great dogs there not yappy like most little dogs they love kids and get along with other animals, there real com to which is nice unlike the labs and collies and the sporting breeds. I have a ferret also and my one corgi rolls around and let her jump all over her. There just a real good sound dog to get, there little dog's with a big dog heart.

I'd say a Labrador would be best for children and cats, they are very very friendly and docile and do not have a bad bone in them. We've just got a Bassett Hound, he's adorable but very active with the cats (try's to eat them! In a playful way!).
I had a Labrador as a child and he was beutiful, very friendly and loving, I'd highly recommend them for families.

Ultimately the cat will rule the roost and it and the dog will become good friends if you play it properly. I would always go for a cross bred or mongrel because they are healthier. if a puppy have a look at its paws if they are big the dog is going to be big. long hair tends to smell more. If an older dog particularly a rescue dog get it's story, it may have hang ups

i'd go and get a rescue dog puppy as then when you introduce it to ur cat, the cat will make sure the puppy knows who's the boss as you dont want the cat to be scared of the dog too badly as then the cat will never come indoors. we got a new puppy(12 weeks) when our cat was 12 and she took to the puppy fine, our dog grew up and she was actually a bit afraid of the cat. whatever dog u get just make sure its healthy and if you go for a rescue dog make sure its good with kids which they normally do tell you.

This site will give you plenty of information about the r ight way to go about choosing a breed.

Whatever breed you decide on, make sure you buy from a reputable breeder and do plenty of research beforehand. If you are not in hurry and can get there, go to Discover Dogs in London in NOvember where you can meet almost every breed of dog & talk to experienced owners.

get a rescue-dog mutt - it'll be cleverer than a pedigree and the place you get it should have good advice re kids and other pets that a pedigree dealer may not have a lue about/not care cos it's about the cash. mutts are just a better quality pet....unless you're looking for a fashion accessory...if that's the case then get a dog-psych' on board, there's not a 'pure-breed' i know that doesn't have problems of one kind or another

Cockapoos are wonderful, they are hypoalergenic, they stay small around 24-30 lbs and they are sweet and smart. They are a mixture of a cockerspaniel and poodle! Each dog has its own peronality, mine sleeps on top of the back of the couch and a friend of mines likes to sleep on washer machine. They are super easy to train and are great with kids.
