Mainly because Columbus was more successfull. At the time of Leif Ericson many of the technologies needed to maintain a successful colony did not exist. Columbus did not rape and murder people though he was unable to keep his men from taking advantage of local tribes. Later explorers that followed him were the ones who started the campaigns of murder and torture. The only tribe that Columbus cracked down on was the Carib tribe and that is because the Caribs were raising the sons of captured females from other tribes to be ritually sacrificed and eaten. The other tribes who were being attacked by the Caribs actually appealled to Columbus to intervene. Unfortunately, the Spanish government realized that there was gold and slaves to be gotten and that they could use canniblism as an excuse so future explorers were given explicit instructions. As far as Leif Ericson I think it is interesting to speculate as to how relationships between europeans and natives would have been different. The Vikings had the reputation of being just as willing to settle in an area as merchants or tradesmen as they were as conquerors. Unfortunately there was too much of a language barrier that prevented trade.

Christopher Columbus's voyages lead to the subsequent colonization of the Americas. Spain initially, followed by England, the Netherlands and France found news ways to expand their power and enrich their states.

Although it is widely accepted that Columbus was not the first nor the discoverer of the new world, he is regarded as the original spark that lit up the entire 500 year process that eventually gave us all the modern countries in the Americas.

Most Europeans had as little contact with the Vikings as possible--they usually ended up having their villages pillaged. By the time it came to light that the Vikings had been in the Americas first, the idea that Columbus had discovered it was already firmly entrenched. Plus, the Vikings didn't establish a permanent settlement--they returned to Europe.

Columbus had the Spanish Royalty financing him and his trip was about money. He also established colonies in the New World. Leif Erikson's achievements in the New World were rather short lived and didn't amount to much.

Cristoforo Colombo gets the fame because he wrote it down. A ship's log detailing how to follow his voyage. A good argument for writing and writing well. Precious few on Questions will follow him if the writing on here is a good cross section. Spelling, structure are rampant problems here.
